Florence to San Gimignano

What is the best way to get from Florence to SG without a car?

Can't seem to find a train route and I'm not sure if there is one. If not, is there a bus going from Florence to SG?

About how far away from Florence and how long does it take to get there?

Appreciate your comments.

Bob

There are two ways. You can take the train from Florence to Poggibonsi, which requires changing trains at Empoli. At Poggibonsi you can either grab a bus at the train station (about 20 minutes) or take a cab to SG.

Alternatively you can take an express bus to Siena, and then transfer there to another express bus which will take you to SG. I think the bus schedules might be a little more convenient. Either way, count on about 2 hours, if memory serves.

Isn't there a bus from Florence to San Gimignano with a change in Poggibonsi?

An alternative is asking someone at your hotel to drive you. We stayed at the Hotel Mario in Florence and the owner's wife drove us all the way to the doorstep of the Hotel Antico Pozzo in San Gimignano. All the way she pointed out the sights and we had a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Wasn't cheap, though, it cost about $40 for the three of us.

Sue: You suggest take the express bus to Siena and SG, and it takes about 2 hours. Do you mean about a 1 hour bus ride to Siena and another 1 hour to SG PLUS time back to Florence? If we rode the express bus directly to Siena and back to Flornece (do not go to SG), how much time in each direction? We may go to Siena only for a day trip. Bart.

Listen to someone that lives in Tuscany. The best way to reach Sangi is to take the bus Siena Diretta (not Rapida or Accelerata), you get off at Poggibonsi at take the local bus to Sangi.

Holly is correct, you can buy a bus ticket from Firenze to San Gimignano, but you must get off the bus in Poggibonsi and get on another, right across the street, for the short trip to San Gimignano. Hint: At the bus depot in Firenze, the timetable sign will likely say Poggibonsi, NOT San Gimignano, while the printed timetable says Firenze - San Gim. Same bus, same time.

Sorry for delay. The other comments you got are good, there is a bus from Florence that takes you to Poggibonsi where you can bus or cab to San G, for a total trip time of around 90 minutes each way, except on Sunday when schedules are less frequent. Because we wanted to see (and overnight) in Siena, we took the route through that city, which is longer (and one of our travel days was a Sunday.) Hope I haven't confused you too much, good luck.
