I read that taking the bus is the best bet...

My question is.... when I look at the bus schedule I am confused... what is Poggibonsai? Is it a town.. the bus stop... or do I switch buses there?

How long is the ride?

Is San G. easy to get to from Lucca or Pisa... or more difficult?

We stopped there on our way to Siena, but we had a car. It was crazy crowded and parking was a nightmare. I hear it's best to stay the night there b/c in the evening it's much more charming.

From Florence you take the bus to Poggibonso (a town) and change for the San G. bus.

IIRC, you have to go via Florence.

We've always driven to San G. so don't know about the bus. The place is total mayhem between 10ish and 4ish and not at all enjoyable, but after 5 and before 9 it is great. If you can overnight there, you will pretty much have it to yourself in April, May, Sept and Oct. Not sure about summer, but it will be less crowded in the evening and early morning.

It is worth the effort to see it. Have a wonderful trip.

If going by train from Poggibonsi-San Gimignano train station you would not go back to Florence but change at Empoli en route to Florence as Empoli is on the Florence-Pisa rail line and Lucca is about 30 mins after changing trains in Pisa. www.trenitalia.com for schedules but there are frequent trains about hourly i believe perhaps less on Sundays - easy to do.
