Florence to Pisa by train

I am planning a 2 week trip to Europe in June. I will be in Florence and need to fly out of Pisa(to Dublin). Is it possible to train into Pisa in the morning, leave my luggage at the train station, sightsee in Pisa, and get to the airport by 5pm-ish? Does the train station in Pisa connect to the airport? Any suggestions are welcome...

I don't know if there are lockers or storage in the Pisa airport to leave your stuff in all day, it is a really small airport. The train station does connect to the Pisa Airport. I believe there are two stops in Pisa, one which is closer to the leaning tower, and one at the airport. If there is no storage at the airport, you might just be better off getting off at the first stop. I'd call the airport and ask, or go to its webpage and check.

There is luggage storage at the Pisa airport. We did exactly what you are doing. The airport is just a few miles from the train station and a cheap taxi ride. It's a very small airport. Be warned that the hours posted for the luggage storage doesn't necessarily mean the attendant will actually be ontime if he takes a break!

According to www.trenitalia.com, there is a left-luggage service at Pisa Centrale train station.

Before leaving your luggage, check that the service will be manned when yuo need it - and as Catbert has pointed out, posted hours are not carved in stone if they happen to interfere with a caffe break...

Actually, there are three train stops in Pisa:
- 1 - Pisa Centrale (main Pisa stop);
- 2 - Pisa S. Rossore (which is closest to the Tower);
- 3 - Pisa Aeroporto (obviously, the airport).

However, all the trains between Florence and Pisa do NOT stop at each of these stations. When you pull up the schedule on Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com) you'll find that the longer runs between Florence-Pisa, stop at Pisa Centrale and then, will usually stop at either Pisa S. Rossore OR the airport .... fyi, to see the stops after you input your start/end destination and bring up a list, click on the "Info" column and then select the "number" (it's train no.) --- this will provide list of train stops for that particular route.

Although the Pisa S. Rossore is the closest one to the Tower, you can also get there from the Pisa Centrale stop. It's about a 30-minute (?) walk OR there's a bus that goes from Centrale, and stops at the Piazza Miracoli (sure I've mucked up name, plaza of miracles where the Leaning Tower is located).

If it were moi, I'd look into the possibility of leaving your luggage at the airport .... even though you're not leaving until the end of the day, is it possible to check your bags with the airline several hours earlier? Also, seems like it'd be an easy taxi ride from the airport to the Tower. Guestimating the distance is around 4-5 miles, certainly no more.

You might be able to take the airport shuttle depending on which airline you are using. www.terravision.it Maybe you could check your bags early or leave them at the airports left luggage. Pisa aeroporto and centrale are only a five minute train ride apart.
