florence to pisa
 

we are staying in pisa but obviously want to visit the leaning tower in pisa. What is our best way to get there?

Thereis a convenient train between Florence and Pisa--frequent departures.

If you want to climb the tower, you know to make reservations in advance, don't you?

I did think it would be best to pre book but went to do that yesterday and apparently our date is gone...sold out!! Any ideas how to get tickets elsewhere?

Just got back from a climb of the tower. I had pre-booked our tickets last month so we had no problem. They do however leave a few spots open during the day. You might be able to get a reservation for one of those if you go very early. It could be for any time of the day, even very late. One man jumped in with our group because of a no-show reservation. It was certainly worth it, and the kids loved it!

Only the 2 30 somethings can answer that as it's a personal choice.

In my opinion, yes. Others will say don't even bother to go to Pisa in the first place, but it is historic and unique.

We went to Pisa as it was on my husband's must do list.
Whilst it is convenient I probably wouldn't recommend an afternoon bus tour. The bus leaves about 2pm but by the time you get there there is hardly any time to climb the tower and there's barely enough time to go through the cathedral and the baptistry was already closed. I'd recommend making your own way there early and then doing everything in your own time-perhaps you can tag on to tour groups and hear the interesting facts and stories which will make you appreciate the place a lot more. In my opinion, the cathedral was fabulous I really enjoyed learning about the construction and history and certain facts about the building and mosaics, association with the Medici Family and the Saint (Ranieri?) whose remains are on display etc. We didn't climb the tower, but would have if we had time and I'm probably a bit disappointed about that (we were late 30's early 40's). The market in Pisa isn't much chop, and you have to be careful of pickpockets. The mozzies as it is starting to get dark are a nightmare so beware! If you are in Florence and have enough time to spend a day in Pisa then by all means go for it, but if you only had limited time in Florence I wouldn't say, forfeit a climb to the top of the Duomo (spectacular view) in favour of an expedition to Pisa.
