Florence to Cinque Terre by train or bus, how long, from where, and cost?
I have about 4 books out, the website for Italy's train system is not very efficient. Does anyone know how to get on a train or bus to the cinque terre from Florence. How long does it take, the cost?

Sarah - From Florence you will normally have to change train at La Spezia or Pisa (sometimes both) depending on your departure time.
Minimum journey time to the nearest, Riomaggiore, is just under 2.5 hours.
A little more to the others.
But N.B. - check timetables on www.trenitalia.it - some trains take 3 hours ++
Return fares are approx:
€ 37 by Eurostar
€ 16 by non-Eurostar trains
Hope this helps ...

For checking train schedules, the Deutsche Bahn's web site is usually quicker; try www.bahn.de. You'll need to know where you're going: the Cinque Terre are five villages.

Thanks Steve you know in the past I just went to Urail this time I went to trentitalia. If you don't know the exact train station and time if give you nothing. Thanks for the times that sounds doable.

you no longer have to change in la spezia unless you want to go on the local train. we went from siena via florence on the 17th oct and we did have one changeover at empoli and from there went directly to montoresso. i don't think it was not a eurostar but it was a very nice train and not a milk run like the local cinque terre train is. there is some site that will give you all sorts of timetables better than trenitalia...we found it surfing the web, wish i could remember it for you--if it comes to me i will repost for you

Very few long-distance trains stop in the CinqueTerre so plan on changing at La Spezia to a local, which should stop in each of the five villages. There are some Florence/Rome-Genoa trains that do stop in Monterosso or Riomaggiore, but relatively few. Try the www.bahn.de site, which is easier to use than the TreinItalia website, though the German site doesn't give fares.
