Florence to Amalfi

We are heading to Amalfi from Florence on Saturday. We're thinking: train to Naples then hire a driver to take us to Amalfi from there. A few questions:
Can anyone recommend a driver or tour service (Rome in Limo is booked solid)?
Is there a better way to do this? Note: Renting a car and driving ourselves is not an option.
Thanks in advance!

Definitely do NOT drive, very smart!! From Naples, we took a public bus there and then hired a car service on the return (can't remember the name but there seemed to be many) to take us directly to the airport - it's a beautiful drive for sure and we found the public bus to be just fine. We based ourselves in the town of Amalfi (loved) and then took public transportation to do day trips to Positano and Ravello. From Ravello, we did the Lemon Trail to Maiori - stunning walk - then bus back to Amalfi.

In 2014 we did exactly what you want to do. When we left Florence, we took an Italo train to Naples and had a limo service meet us at the train station to take us to our hotel in Positano. When leaving Positano, we had the same limo service take us back to the Naples train station and took a Trenitalia train to Rome. The limo service was Due Golfi Car Service (www.duegolficarservice.it/). We booked initially through Positano Taxi (www.positanotaxi.net) which is part of the Due Golfi Group.

I'm too cheap to hire a driver. I would take a train from Florence to Salerno (3:48 hours, no change) and then take the bus or ferry to Amalfi. If you mean Positano and not Amalfi and you can't find a driver, you can always take a taxi. But I'd train Naples to Sorrento before starting the taxi meter. Did I mention I'm cheap?

Thanks for your input everyone! We found a reasonably priced driving service (about $260, split among four people). We'll take the Italo to Naples and then meet the driver at the station.
THanks again!

I would rather have spent these 200 USD to the International Commitee of the Red Cross. But it's up to you.

??????
Tell us your expenses and we'll comment on what should have been donated to charity.

Yup, it is! But for the record, I'm only spending $50 because the price will be split among a group and I regularly donate to the Red Cross. Thanks for the passive aggressive suggestion, though. Have a nice day!

He hired a service, not a taxi. FWIW - Taxis in Naples can either be metered or fixed rate (you have to ask for the fixed rate). The fixed rate for Naples/Amalfi is 140€. The taxis must display the fixed rates (on the back of the front seat), you must ask for it before leaving and they are required to give you a receipt. Four people plus luggage would need a van type taxi.

The Naples fixed rates can be viewed by clicking the pdf on the Comune Napoli website.

Salerno is much closer to Amalfi than Naples. The road between Salerno is not as bogged down with busses and traffic as the road between Sorrento and Amalfi. I don't know if Salerno taxis have a fixed rate like Naples.

Amalfi taxis have some fixed rates, but are higher than Naples taxis.

Trenitalia also has several trains per day Florence/Salerno that don't require a change in Naples (travel time just under 4 hours).

Yo 2Aquilas,
We traveled all throughout the AC this past March and suggest:

-Minori, Sal de Riso is just one reason to visit. There are also at least 3 places that make outstanding sandwiches (Punto Pane/Macelleria Cioffi Pasquale/Dieci Piu) plus an excellent home-made pasta specialist 'Il Pastaio'.
-Cetara is a must, a close second to Minori for 'not having yet been overwhelmed by commercial tourism/still retains an authentic feel'. The 'Acqua Pazza' restaurant is a great idea, and they also can sell you their own home-made 'colatura di alici.'
-Lunch at 'Le Arcate' in Atrani will provide a world-class view *we were really into world-class views throughout this trip.

Best-kept secret: the morning view from Scala looking down on Ravello.

If you have time and interest, the isles Ischia and Procida will not disappoint.
Good call on that taxi. Split four ways its a no-brainer.

I am done. the Phillippe Miseree
