Florence-stores closed on Sundays?
My husband and I will be in Florence for a couple of days in mid-october.

Someone told me that the stores may be closed on Sundays in Florence. Does anyone know if this is true?

We are particularly interested in the leather shops and outdoor market. Is the market closed on Sundays too?

We get into Florence friday afternoon and leave monday morning ... but we are spending saturday in the chianti region, so friday afternoon and sunday are really are only times to shop ... and I certainly don't want to miss out!

Thanks for your help.

Hi Amy
you should be able to find enough to keep you fairly busy on a Sunday in Florence. Yes some of the stores will be closed; but the last time I was there( about 3 years ago )I found many of the stores in the trendy areas of Florence did open around noon. A good guide book like Fodors or Frommers will have all the details you will need in regard to the markets. I got a great deal on a leather jacket and pants at David II near the San Larenzo market.
Also many of the museums will be open on Sunday so you could spend Sunday doing that and the week days devote to shopping. Just an idea.
Good luck
la dolce Italy!
Sherri
to the top for Amy

I can never remember one store being closed in Florence on Sunday during my visits. Usually they are all open because this is when both tourists and locals do their shopping. Even OPF Santa Maria Novella is open on Sundays. It is usually on Mondays that stores are closed in Italy, especially in Roma.

Thank you both ... you've made me feel much better ...

Sherri, I'd love to hear more about this place where you got your leather jacket and pants. One thing I definitely want to get in Florence is a leather jacket. Also interested in handbags.

Can you bargain on leather in the stores ...or is that only in the markets? Did you do a lot of comparison shopping on leather items? May I ask how much you got your coat for?

More advice on this would be appreciated as fodors says shops are closed on Sundays

I was in Florence on a Sunday last year. Many shops were open, especially anything of interest to tourists, but I did notice most of the clothing stores were closed.

We were in Florence, on a Sunday, recently. While many of the stores are closed, there were quite a few that opened up later in the afternoon (after 2:00 or 3:00). Also, I recall that the outdoor market (San Lorenzo) was also open in the afternoon. Good luck!

Just got back from Florence. Most stores are open on Sundays as noted. They do close down from around 1200-3-4 PM though. The open market around Mercato Central is open-great shopping. The leather merchants bargain there but not in the stores. Beter quality in the stores. Check out the prices and compare the quality. Bargello, Science Museum were closed on Sunday. Perhaps the Uffizi as well (not sure). Florence had the better shopping than Rome. Leather, ceramics, shirts, belts, whatever. Best leather products in Leather Factory behind San Croce Church but very pricey. Have fun.

Dear Alice, as usual Fodors is wrong. I was in Firenze just last January and I can remember almost every store on the Via Tornabuoni, from Prada to Ferragamo to Hogan, being open on Sunday. Also, every single shoe store on Via Calzaiuoli was open. There were throngs of locals doing all their shopping during the January saldis (sales). And I am positive that at least half of the stores that line the square in front of Santa Croce were open.

Yes, maybe some of the stores open later in the day, but they do open so you can go shopping.
