Florence Restaurants - Which do you prefer: La Giostra or Cibreo?
We will be in Florence for 2 nights and have decided to do lunch at Mario's and Vineria alle Murate and dinner at Beccofino and either La Giostra or Cibreo. All opinions would be much appreciated!

We had reservations at La Giostra last year, and unfortunately didn't make it there that night. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the place, though...if that's any help. We are planning it again for our next trip.

Just returned from Florence last night. Dinner at La Giostra was our favorite! Our B&B recommended it, made our reservation and had us ask for Salerno, one of the sons. The owner did a huge presentation when he opened our wine.
Go for La Giostra. Get dressed up and enjoy!

Another vote for Il Ritrovo, 4 via dei Pucci, opens at 7:30, closed Monday
We ate there twice and were hard pressed to spend 100E for two with wine for a meal that was well prepared and beautifully presented.

I deplore the posters who jump angrily on simple questions as much as anyone, but sometimes I do wonder whether some people don't make it a little too easy for themselves...
La Giostra has a Web site with an e-mail address; presumably one can send them an e-mail to reserve.

It might be advisable to state the date, the hour (in the European fashion: alle ore 20, for example, for 8:00 p.m.) and the number of people in Italian. (Any Italian guidebook would provide the necessary words.)
Il Ritrovo does not seem to have a Web site, but there are numerous Web sites that give its address and telephone number. If asking for a reservation in Italian is too difficult, the normal way to proceed is to ask one's hotel to make the reservation.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions/suggestions. We'll be going to Italy the month of September and will be sure (or at least try!)to make post a trip report when we get back. Talk to you on the forums in the meantime...

LA GIOSTRA IS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD_ i didn't stop talking about it for months and i used to work at a four star restaurant in New Orleans. Have the filet with the armagnac sauce-delicious! They give you complimentary appetizers and a flute of champagne.

Dinner at La Giostra was probably the most memorable meal we had in Italy during our 2-week trip in 2001. They make you feel very special, with both the service and the food. Be prepared for huge portions... but it's so good you'll want to eat every morsel.

Can anyone tell me approximate prices for this restaurant? (For a primo and a secondo) I had a look at their website and the menu looks fantastic! I really want to try it sometime...but my husband and I have to watch our money... Yet another reason why it is better to visit Italy as a tourist, and not to live here with the horrific Italian salaries!

It's been a few years. . . but I don't recall our dinner (for two) with wine being much over $100. We had an antipasto platter (in addition to the complimentary ones, which we didn't know were coming) and secondi----I can't eat pasta so I skip that course. That was in 2001.
