Florence or Tuscan Country Side?

I will be on my honeymoon this year (mid August) and we are planning to stay in Tuscany for 3 days. My options are to stay in Lucca and catch one of the Opera's in the Puccini festival and drive around the countryside , or.....stay in Florence do some usual sights and museums and take a day trip to the countryside.
We love good food, wine, music and art so I am sure we will be happy either way. I have been to florence before (and don't mind returning) but my fiance has not.
Which option do you think is better?

Only you two can really decide. You've been to Florence before so you know what that is like. What does your fiancé prefer

The countryside around Lucca, which is near the coast, is not particularly exciting, although Lucca itself is a beautiful small city. The Alpi Apuane area north of Lucca is supposed to be very beautiful, although different from the classic Tuscan heavily-beaten track.

I found Florence less "romantic" than I expected. Big city with lots of activity compared to the quiet countryside. I loved the countryside and the sweet friendly people there.

I'd vote for Lucca, particularly as you sound like opera lovers. I wouldn't pass up the chance to attend an opera at that time of year. As indicated above, Lucca is a very beautiful and interesting small city. Florence is a big city. I'd say on my honeymoon I'd rather do Lucca. Maybe you could train into Florence and see Gli Uffici or one or two of big churches for art.

I presume you are going to spend some time in Venice, which is where I'd have gone on my honeymoon had we (1) known what it was like and (2) could have afforded it.
