Florence-Monaco train
 

Hi all,

Leaving for Italy in a little over three weeks. Been following advice from the many people here in this forum, including waiting to get to Italy to purchase the train tickets to do the Rome-Florence-Venice travel.

However, we are going to Monaco for one night (I know, long train ride for one night). Our plans are to take the train from Florence to Monaco during the day (and enjoy the scenic route) and return the following day on the night train.

Since we'd like to have a 2-bed sleeper on the return tain, should I reserve my tickets right away? I have entered my itinerary on the trenitalia web site, and it shows that the Florence-Monaco leg can't be bought in advance, but the return could. However, when I enter all the information, I get a "Reservation system - Service not included for this train at requested date" message.

Trenitalia lists a phone number on their website, but I have been unable to get in touch with them using that number (89 20 21).

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't understand your itinerary. Are you looking for an overnight train from Monaco to Firenze ("Florence")? The only night service I can see involves changing trains at Pisa at 0324.

That's exactly it Geoff. Since there's no direct train, we'll get so sleep for a few hours, then transfer in Pisa (see the beautiful tower at 3:00 am! No lines!).

This gets us back to Florence at 5:30 am or so.

I suspect the reservation system may not let you book a sleeper for a journey that arrives at 0324. You may be able to book a seat for that journey or book a sleeper to Roma, then get a train to Firenze.
The train from Monaco also has sleeping cars for Venezia. Why not go straight from Monaco to Venezia?

AH! That's a good point. I figured we could get a sleeper and just transfer train, but they might not allow that unless you're going the full route. Does anyone know if Trenitalia have a phone number that can be reached from north America?

I hadn't thought of going straight from Monaco to Venice. Our B&B is already reserved for the overnight in Florence...and I was looking forward to a "wind down day" in Florence, before the last leg of our trip in Venice.
