Florence Itinerary Advice
 

I'm spending a few days in "Florence" at the end of the month, so I'm trying to plan a tentative itinerary based on guidebooks. I was wondering if the following would be do-able. Am I missing anything worthwhile?

Day 1
Arrive in evening

Day 2
- Morning, go to Pitti Palace - only the gallery and royal apartments
- Brancacci Chapel and Palazzo Vecchio are on a combo-ticket
- Reserve 3pm for Uffizi Gallery

Day 3
It's a Monday, so a day trip, maybe to Volterra

Day 4
Medici-Riccardi Palace
Museum of San Marco
San Lorenzo Church
Medici Chapels

Day 5
Lucca or San Guilangano
Maybe see something when we get back

Day 6
Accademia
Bargello
Duomo and Duomo Museum

You have a pretty tight schedule but here are some other recommendations:

Bapistry, especially the doors
Santa Croce
Piazzalle Michelangelo
San Miniato
Santa Maria Novella

Day 5 - do you mean San Gimignano?

You might be able to do Volterra and San Gimignano the same day since they're close to each other.

If you like frescoes go to the civic museum in Siena.

Leave some time to just wander around. Florence is lovely for that, especially in the evenings. We spent one day walking up into the suburbs behind Pitti Palace and it was one of our favourite days.

I've commented where I think a change or tweak is neded.

Day 1
Arrive in evening
- have the cab driver take you up to "Piazzale Michelangelo" to get the nightime view from the Piazza over the city. This will make you feel as though you've properly arrived!

Day 3
It's a Monday, so a day trip, maybe to Volterra
- Good, bear in mind that shops tend to be closed on Monday morning and open at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Day 6
Accademia
- do this in the afternoon, the queues are not so bad (in fact go along at 5pm is best)

Leave some time to visit the Piazza Michaelangelo for the views of Florence.

One evening, take the no. 7 bus from the E side of the SMN station up to Fiesole and watch the sunset from the terrace of the Bar Bleu.

I also recommend Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce and Piazzale Michaelangelo.

There is a wonderful fresco at Santa Maria Novella called The Trinity, from 1427, by Masaccio. At Santa Croce you will find frescoes by Giotto, plus the tombs of Michaelangelo, Rossini and Galileo.

Since you are going to the Pitti Palace, you might want to check out the gardens; they are quite interesting.

Finally, if time permits, I would recommend the Museo
dell’Opera del Duomo, which contains the works from the Duomo, including one of Michaelangelo's last Pietàs and a Donatello sculpture of La Maddalena.

we had a similar amount of time in Florence a few years ago.

this is what we managed to do, so far as I remember:

Day 1 - wandering around, getting our bearings, seeing the duomo, going up the campanile, the baptistry.
Day 2 - pitti palace, nearby boboli gardens, shopping in pm.
DAy 3 - day trip by bus to siena.
Day 4 - uffizi am, lunch, accadamia [both reserved], ???
DAy 5 - medici chapel, bus to Fiesole, tour town and roman remains, lunch. back to Firenze, ??? opera in evening.
Day 6 - market, shopping, ponte vecchio, etc.

there are things we did that I can't remember and other things like the bargello that we never got round to.
