Florence Italy.....Grand Or Westin Excelsior........

Which hotel do you prefer. Do you think April is a prime time to visit. Thanks.

Ike, I haven't stayed at either hotel but I think April is a prime time to visit. It will be warming, spring's earliest flowers are out, and other than Easter week, you should be able to avoid the worst crowds. Have a lovely time.

i just wrestled with this decision. we are going at the end of september. we wound up booking the grand, mostly because friends of ours stayed there and loved it, and we had no personal recommendation for the excelsior. From what I've read they are both spectacular. I will certainly post when I return from my trip in October.

If you are considering staying at the Grand or Excelsidor, and can afford either, do yourself a favor and consider JK Place

There are two other hotels in Firenze that are superior to your hotels: the Savoy and Helvetia e Bristol.

I think the Grand is horrid and full of pretentious Americans with bad hair. But, maybe you like that sort of thing?

Hi Ike

I was in Florence in early April for 9 days and it was wonderful. The weather was cool but pleasant, with only 1 day of light rain. I had not been to Florence before but it was not very crowded. But keep in mind that this is the prime time for European school tours. The kids didn't really bother me because they usually traveled in packs.

that's about as pretentious as you can get, IOC!

Hello ike, I have stayed at the Excelsior, a suite overlooking the Arno River. Beautiful hotel but some people have found the street traffic (which is between the hotel and the river) to noisy. I have also stayed at the Savoy, another beautiful hotel. The Savoy location in right in the cultural center, at the Piazza dellaRepubblica which is quite handy for going back to your room when you want to although the Excelsior is not that far away. Out of the two the Excelsior is my favorite. Enjoy yourself in Florence!!
