It is a little hard to respond - how many people, what time of year, etc would help us with recommendations. Our family stayed at Hotel Accademia - very nice, affordable and good location in Florence near Duomo and Medici Chapels.

why don't you look into B&B's or apartment rentals? In my experience it's more economical, check out sleepinitaly.com I booked a B&B from them in Rome last week for 83 Euros a night and I had a wonderful experience with their service and the room was exactly what the picture showed, no surprises.

with four adults, you may need two rooms, especially since you'll have only one bathroom. with two teenaged boys, we started booking two rooms a couple of years back - always on the same floor and usually within a few doors of each other.
