Florence in October
 

Been to Florence a couple times and love it. Have been there in springtime and it has gotten so crowded that I hesitate to go back. Was wondering how crowded it is in October. Anyone been and can report on the crowds?

I've been to Florence in October. My recollection is that it wasn't terribly crowded, but it was very rainy. It was several years ago, though, so it may be busier these days.

We normally travel in mid-to-late October and have been to Florence several times in that time period. Over the past 10 years or so, we've noticed that October has become an increasingly popular month and the city more crowded as a result.

But I don't know what your view of "crowded" is. On our last trip, there were lines to enter the most popular sights, but if you've already seen those you can concentrate on other things (and there are dozens of lesser-known sights). We typically don't make dinner reservations in advance and had no trouble getting into restaurants. In all of our trips at that time of year, we've only had rain in Florence twice; one time a light drizzle that lasted the better part of a day and the other a heavy downpour that lasted perhaps 45 minutes.

Was just back in Florence, most recently in late October, and it was busy, but not crowded. In fact, many (Florentine) friends were commenting that it seemed quieter than usual. Cruise ship groups were still coming in during the day, but by 4pm the streets were clearer.

Having said that, I walked past the Uffizi entrance twice and there was a queue both times, but nothing like the ones in Spring and Summer stretching to the Arno and beyond.

I enjoy going in Autumn as the food on offer changes and the city begins to shift into the cooler months. The Mercato Centrale at this time of year is always great for getting a good sense of the Florentine approach to seasonal foods...and there's always Lampredotto available ;)

October is still considered high season in Florence, but, of course, it's less crowded than September or May. I've been to Florence in January a few times, and it was blissfully uncrowded. There's always the possibility of bad weather, but there are lots of things to do indoors there. I think any time between November (after All Saints weekend) and before Easter, with the exception of the weeks between Christmas and Epiphany, is the ideal time to visit Florence. If that's not possible, October (as late as possible) should be fine.

Thanks for your thoughts. It's looking like we would possible be there mid October. Maybe I can try and turn the trip around and arrive later.

We too were there in October and had a great time. Can highly recommend the Hotel Pendini.
