I'll be traveling to Florence for just 1-day via train from Rome. Are there any sights I should definitely see there? In Venice we plan to stay 2-days - any suggestions on what we must see?

Also, does it matter what order I travel in. I was thinking Rome(3days)-Venice(2days)-Rome(1-day)-Florence(1-day),back to Rome(2days). Is it more logical to reorganize the travel plans?

Why do you want to go back to Rome in the middle? I would do Rome to Florence to Venice and then back to Rome (assuming you have to fly both in and out of Rome)

Some people will tell you that you are trying to do too much in the number of days you seem to have. You will be spending several hours on trains. You might want to consider skipping one of the cities and spending more time in the other two, and then maybe add in some closer day trips. One idea could be to do some of the smaller Tuscan towns between Rome and Florence. But that would mean not seeing Venice and if you really want to then you should . But I would definitly skip that going back to Rome in the middle idea.

I don't understand why you want to return to Rome in between Florence and Venice. So to answer your question that part isn't "logical" to me.

By your current plan that means checking in to hotels *5* times in only 9 days of traveling.

You should think of Florence as being `between' Rome and Venice, although they really form a triangle. So either go:

Rome 3 days, Florence 2-3 days, Venice 2-3 days, hustle back to Rome 1 night, or

Rome 3 days, Florence 3 days, Venice 3 days, fly out of Venice.

If you want to adjust the number of nights in each, fine. But you should spend at least 2 nights if you want to see a place.

Hi 3cuteboys, have you already purchased your airline tickets? If not I would strongly suggest that you do an "open jaw" ticket. For example fly into Rome and fly home from Venice so that you can visit Rome, Florence and Venice.

If you already have your plane tickets then think about arriving in Rome (which it seems you are) and go directly to Florence. Then go to Venice. Then back to Rome and stay until it is time for you to fly home from Rome.

By all means do not bounce back to Rome after being in Venice and before going to Florence.

I think you do not have a map of Italy. Please get one. Any bookstore will have one. As capxxx said, think of Rome, Florence and Venice as being sort of a triangle. Best wishes.

With only 2 days, the question in Venice is not necessarily what you must see, but more what sights will you leave out? It largely depends on your interests--which are?

Oh my God, I love this forum - thank you soo much for your recommendations. No I have not purchased the tickets so I will look into the open jaw ticket. After your suggestions, I think we'll do Rome-3/Florence-2-3/Venice-2-3. (We're arriving on the 12/24). Someone mentioned I should leave one city out, and I might end-up doing that and leaving Florence out (it sounds like the boys would enjoy Venice more), but right now, it's just that we're taking the boys for a once in a lifetime family trip and unfortunately my husband can only close during the holidays (self-business owner, darn). Mom & Dad have traveled to Rome before, so I pretty much know what to see. But the boys want to see as much as possible so we thought of including Venice & Florence for us all. I thought if we get a glance of each place it will create interest for future travel.

About what to see in Florence & Venice are there any must see places (I know we'll be limited in time 2-3 days in each.

Also, someone suggested I do Rome at the end, but I thought I should do Rome first because of X-mas(?) Or does it not matter, cause I can do Rome at the end for New Years.
