we were in Italy just a few weeks ago and rented a car in Rome (bad idea) and drove thru Tuscany for a week. Our last town was Greve from where we then drove to Florence to drop off our car. On advice from other Fodorites, we dropped our car at Florence airport and took a taxi to our hotel (Caravaggio which was the best!). I am so glad we did-the taxi fare was about 10 euros, I think ,and well worth it. As we drove into the city by taxi, I thought, my gosh, I would have had a massive headache trying to maneuver and figure out all the turns with the heavy traffic we encountered. Also, once you drop off car in city, it's difficult at best to drag your suitcases along the cobblestoned, very narrow sidewalks trying to find your hotel.Being dropped at the door was a real treat! The other idea of taking a train into Florence might be as expensive as a taxi to your hotel from the airport, and you're still left with getting from train station to your hotel. Sure wish I were back there now!!
