If it's a woman "Under the Tuscan Sun". Anecdotes and recipes by a woman professor who spent summers in Tuscany for 20 years. My wife loved it. Sequel is Bella Tuscany. (To me it's like reading about how grass grows).

I do not know whether it hsa been translated in English, but "Nero di maggio" is a lovely noir book set in Florence in the late 1930s and wrote by Leonardo Gori, writer and pharmacist in Florence.

Galileo's Daughter, by Dava Sobel. Especially interesting if your friend visited the History if Science museum in Florence.
