Florence and Tuscany-8 nights-recommendations on places to stay, configuring the trip?? Thanks!

My niece and I are planning a trip to Italy in May. My assignment is to plan the 8 nights we have in Florence and Tuscany. I am thinking 4 nights in Florence-without car and 4 nights in Tuscany-with car. Appeciate any wisdom on my "assignment". Places to stay in Florence and also Tuscany. I hear Siena is not the place to anchor in southern Tuscany...thanks much!!!!

Linda, I would opt for 3 Florence and 5 Tuscany and I would stay south of Siena for the best of day trips. No one can help you without a price range--be specific.

Here is a start !

BOB’S FAVORITE DIGS IN TUSCANY

The province of Siena is easily my favorite part of Tuscany. Here is a list of accommodations that I suggest in the mid-price ranges. All price assume a typical double room for 2 people. Most have other room options.

A. RURAL LOCATIONS: All have parking and good food options nearby

1. Relais La Saracina www.lasaracina.it 230 to 300E
Fabulous country home near Montepulciano—helpful owners

2. Le Traverse www.letraverse.it 155E
Small B&B just south of Pienza—hard to beat at the price—has pool

3. Lucignanello Bandini www.piccolomini.it 150[2] to 244E[4]
These are apartments in a lovely but remote rural setting.

4. Frances Lodge www.franceslodge.it 180E
Very nice B&B on a hilltop overlooking Siena, 3 miles distant.

5. Fattoria Tregole www.fattoria-tregole.com 110E to 180E
Has both B&B and apartment accommodations. Near Castellina in Chianti

B. IN-TOWN LOCATIONS: For walking convenience to shops etc.

1. Palazzo del Capitano www.palazzodelcapitano.com 130 to 180E
Very nice small hotel in center of San Quirico—perfect location to explore.

2. Vecchia Oliviera www.tuscany.net/oliviera/ 130 to 180E
Nice 4 star hotel at the gate into lovely Montalcino---has pool.

3. Palazzina Cesari www.montalcinoitaly.com 80 to 110E
Lovely small B&B in heart of Montalcino—great value—2 nite stay minimum.

4. Locanda di San Francesco www.locandasanfrancesco.it 180 to 200E
New boutique B&B in a lovely location in Montepulciano—great reviews !

5. Palazzo Ravizza www.palazzoravizza.it 130 to 180E
Very nice & popular hotel in Siena with parking.

I second the vote for Locanda di San Francesco in Montepulicano. We loved it! I would go back in a heartbeat.

In Florence I strongly recommend Il Villino http://www.ilvillino.it/home.cfm

A great hotel with about 9 rooms a little north of the Duomo but a very easy and short walk. There are good restaurants nearby also. The service was impeccable. They did everything they could to assure a nice stay at their place.

In southern Tuscany I also second the recommendation above for Palazzo Cesira http://www.montalcinoitaly.com/eng/home_cesira.htm
Again, a small B&B in Montalcino that has about 5 rooms. Roberta and Lucilla runs a wonderful establishment; clean and nice rooms at a reasonable price. Again, they work hard to assure a comfortable stay. Easy to get to, you can drive right to the front of it.
