Budman--First of all, I have been shadowing all your inquiries re: Italy/Tuscany because we are going to similar areas just after your trip. We plan to be in Florence Oct 4/5 and Montalcino for 4 nights in October as well. I'm very excited about Brunello country and looking forward to it.
Re: Florence and lodging. We have stayed at several places in Florence over the last couple of years. I'm not getting the feeling that you want to splurge but want to stay at a modest place easily located near the central area. We are presently booked at Hotel Elite (T-055-215395;F-55213832) which has a 90 euro rate and is close to the train station near Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Haven't stayed there yet. We have also stayed at Hotel Pendini-www.florenceitaly.net and it was very adequate but that was a couple of years ago.
I'm looking forward to hearing of your trip--hope you also have "Tuscan wine drinking gloves!"

macanimals, thanks, that's precisely what this trip is about -- Brunello country and all the little wine towns. I'm not interested in touring -- I already know how wine is made. My main interests are "tasting wine and eating food." I'm also interested in checking out their Super Tuscans. I'll check those places out.

ira, gotta do the Pisa/Florence thingy for my wife. This will be a "drive by shooting." I'm really not interested in checking out "David's" anatomy this trip. ((a)) Thanks for the link on Peterson's. ((b))

I just received confirmation from Peterson's that they have availability for one night. 62 Euro for an en suite double room. No breakfast! How am I going to get my morning coffee? Anybody stayed there? ((a)) ((b))

Of course I've stayed there.

For morning coffee and a panini or a pastry go downstairs and out the front door.

Turn right. Walk about 10 steps to the corner. Enter cafe.

Caffe latte and a sandwich - 2.55E

Their website states: "As we do not live in the guesthouse we kindly ask you to inform us about your arrival hour." I plan to arrive about 6 or 7pm. If we are delayed, is there a number or address posted so we can gain entry, get the key, etc? ((b))

Hi Bud,

Mrs Ancellotti will give you a phone number to call in case there is no one there to meet you.

There is a phone box around the corner (As you face the door go downhill to your right and left at the corner).

However, it only takes phone cards. So if you are coming in by train, by one at the station.

If the cafe on the corner is open, they will make the call for you.

If not you go uphill (to your left as you face the door) about 3 blocks, there is a hotel across the street with a very nice gentleman at the desk who will make the call for you.
