We're taking our first trip to Italy in mid September. In between a few days spent in Venice and Rome, we decided to base ourselves in Montalcino for a three days to take in some good wine and nice Tuscan scenery and visit some towns. However, I was wondering if it's worth making a day trip to Florence if we have three days in Tuscany. And if so, what's the best way to get there from Montalcino? We will have a rental car, but I'm not sure whether driving to Florence is a good idea.
Any suggestions/advice is much appreciated. Thanks for the help.

If you only have three days, I would suggest that you include Siena among your day trips and exclude Florence. It's certainly possible to do a day trip to Florence from Montalcino, but the time you would spend on the road would hardly warrant the time that you have in Florence.

Hi K,

It's 1:30 hr between cities.

You can park at the Florence SMN train station.

If you start at the Mercato Centrale, walk up to the Accademia and then to the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio, you can "see" Florence in a day.

However, I go with Eloise. Visit Siena for a day and save Florence for when you have more time.

Of course, you can skip Rome and go to Florence instead.

I agree with Eloise, as I often do. There is just too much to see and do near Montalcino--see Siena instead.
