Floods in South France

Hi

A storm system is moving East from Spain along the Med coast.

Another night of thunder & lightning with much rain. Brighter this morning, the alert has gone from red to orange for Herault & Gard.

We've now had 125 mm rain in about 24 hrs. Further South they had 320mm, further North nearly 400mm.

The worst flooding seems to have been Nimes, Petit Camargue, Lunel, Montpellier, Lattes, and I've heard reports of very heavy rain in Beziers.

The siren went twice during the night in Sommieres. But each time the water entered the lowest part of town , it receded. The rainfall from the Cevennes will arrive during the day, so it is not over yet.

The autoroute, railway and Montpellier airport are all closed.

The helicopters were out at dawn checking the situation, so expect clips on local news during the day.

A good source of local news : http://fr.fc.yahoo.com/l/languedoc.html

Hello Peter, that sounds scary!!! I pray that this will not be a situation where towns and villages are flooded. I went to the website you gave but the only language was in French which I cannot read as I do not know French. I went onto Yahoo for the French news (in the English language) but there was no news regarding this terrible storm. May you all be safe. My best wishes and prayers.

Goodness! Please keep us up to date. I hope everyone is OK. Any damage to the vineyards?

Count your blessings that you aren't in New Orleans.

My best hopes that there is little loss of property and none of life.

Thanks for reporting, mp
