Flooding in Venice at the end of December?
Hi all...
I'm considering a short trip day-trip from Florence to Venice the end of December. Anyone have any real-time info on the flooding. It lloks bad this year: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...#slide=1746286 SS |
A friend of mine was in Venice exactly one week ago and they had some acqua alta already.

Anything above 80 will require boots in low areas. This year (so far) is normal. A few records may have been broken last year when the first flood occurred in October. Last year was pretty bad. You can't trust the photos on Huffington Post. They recycle images from previous years. The media likes to lie to tell a more dramatic story. Arianna knows how to play the game. |
Since it is a day trip you are considering, check the situation from Florence and make your plans depending on the weather.

It's not so much the weather -- though that would affect your enjoyment walking around Venice. It's the tides. So check the tide levels in Venice before going.

Flooding, more commonly known as "acqua alta" here in Venice, is like predicting weather. Here is the website that shows the forecast for the next few days: http://www.comune.venezia.it/flex/cm.../IDPagina/1748
Last week the highest tides was at 105-110 cm which affected Piazza San Marco but didn't really affect us here at the Rialto area. Even in San Marco, platforms are set up so that people can cross the piazza. Or you can invest in an inexpensive pair of rubber boots. |
But how frequently, more or less, is there ANY acqua alta at the end of December?
Common sense (I think) would say that, since most rivers flowing into the northern Adriatic are relatively low in mid winter, the chances are lower than in the six weeks after the autumn equinox (now) or when the snows start melting after mid-Feb. But there's more to meteorology than common sense. Do I need to take my wellingtons, and my wellington taker-offer, to Venice over Xmas? |
Falnner, the Italians do not allow any imperialists into their country these days, with or without boots
