Flooding in Venice
I am scheduled to arrive in Venice on the 27th of December. Should I expect this flooding to continue? some say the high tides only last a few hours. Should I bring waders?

i read that the mayor of venice was asking tourists to stay away, but that was last week.
check out some pics of the acqua alta. http://abcnews.go.com/International/popup?id=6375002 |
Flooding is caused by many factors, including the lunar tides which are highest at or near the new and full moons. There will be a new moon on Dec. 27th at mid-day, so there is a chance of flooding. The flooding usually lasts for a couple of hours and does not (usually) involve the entire city.
Here is a link to lunar charts: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/MoonPhase.php Here is a link to helpful info on dealing with acqua alta during a visit to Venice: http://www.visit-venice-italy.com/ac...nice-italy.htm Here is a map of the wooden walkways set up during flooding: http://www2.comune.venezia.it/maree/en_viabilita.asp And this interactive website will help you plot a course using the wooden walkways from one part of Venice to another during acqua alta: http://gisportal.insula.it/moduli/percorsi/ |
WOW! Thank you so much, Jean. At least now I can know what to expect.I wil continue to monitor conditions and hope for the best.

If you can, it would be fun to bring your own rubber boots. All the locals wear yellow rubber boots. When I was there the water went down low enough by 10 am that we could wander around the city on the gang planks without any boots. Of course that was a few years ago when Venice was a few centimeters higher as I heard that it's been sinking 1 cm per year.
