Flooding in Venice

Planning to be in Venice next week and just heard of severe flooding. Thinking of rerouting my trip and skipping Venice because of this...any thoughts??

Flooding in Venice sounds fascinating to me.

There's a show on PBS/Nova this week on the subject : "The Sinking City of Venice."
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/venice/
this should answer all of your questions!

Buy some cheap rubber boots when you get there (easy to find at major grocery stores/shopping centers) and enjoy seeing Venice on those wooden platform things they erect all over the place. Been there twice when there was flooding, and it didn't mar the experience a bit. Just get used to saying "scusi" as you navigate the platforms and try not to knock people off.

I too will be in Venice next week and the pictures of St Mark's square showed no wooden platforms just floating tables. I guess it could be fun???

Flooding in Venezia is caused by high tides which occur in a fortnightly cycle around the times of full moon and new moon. The tide rises and falls twice a day, so Venezia is rarely flooded for long. The dates and times of high tides are predicted, but are influenced by the weather. Main routes through the old city are kept open by the erection of wooden walkways.

Geoff,

While this is true, what is happening right now in Venice is not the regular flooding but flooding due to tremenously bad weather throughout Italy. Water is 1.5 meters (almost 5 feet) above normal right now. It is above the wooden plankways too.

This should pass but it must be awful for those there now.

One of the kids on Wings900, an airline collectables website has posted some photos of his Venetian dwelling and surrounding flood sites. The photos are enlightening and can be seen by going to: www.wings900, clicking on "Forums",
then "Squawk Talk", and "OT-It's that time again."

Gerry K, thanks. Wow some photos ! and I'm going to Venice in 10 days. Just like last year when acqua alta was at its highest 2 weeks before my arrival and there was none (well almost)when I got there.

Gerry, thanks for the link. The photos are fantastic. Here's the URL:
http://www.wings900.com/vb/showthrea...threadid=11757

Thanks gerry and pass it along to Frederico. The picture of his hallway made it more human in scope

Unbelievable. And I complained last May because it poured rain the day we arrived in Venice and the day we left. Compared to this, we were lucky!

Denise Nov 18th, 2002 08:48 AM

Its been raining for days around Venice and according to the weather channel its supposed to rain for the next 10 days. Everything is pretty waterlogged.

Betsy
Thanks for the URL. Great shots telling a sad story for the people there right now. So this happens every winter??? Except not quite this bad??
