Flooding in N-W Italy

Hi, I'm new to Fodors.
As a first post I thought I might warn travellers that there is heavy flooding in Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta at the moment. A state of emergency has been declared. Many roads and bridges are out and some villages have been evacuated. There has also been loss of life. Although it is not raining at the moment, more rain is forecast for Monday 2nd June. I would advise anybody to avoid the area at all costs. This includes Turin and all the nearby Alpine valleys, including the upper Po valley.

Do you live in the area?

TuckH May 31st, 2008 05:27 AM

The flooding is not limited to Italy - France, Germany and I believe parts of Switzerland too.

To AnthonyGA

I live in central Italy.

Haven't heard much about flooding in Switzerland. We've had high winds and a few thundershowers this week that caused a bit of damage but barely enough to make the papers.

Update 1st June: more rain in Turin overnight. No word of new damage, but many roads and bridges still out. Best keep away from the area for a few days.

Thanks for this: VERY helpful. I was planning to be driving through the Valle d'Aosta on Wed and Thurs.

Now the tricky questions, given Italy: you'll see how long it is since I last did any serious driving there.

- Is there a Ministry of Transport or equivalent website that gives updated information on the state of the roads?
- Is there any national radio channel that does this? (In Italian is just fine)
- And, in your experience, is RDS remotely as helpful for traffic problems in Italy as iot is in the UK and Germany?

For flanneruk

Best internet site (in Italian) for traffic info. is "www.aiscat.it".
Free telephone no. 1518.
Radio updates on FM 102.5 and FM 103.3 (mainly covering autostrade).
Hopefully things should be getting back to normal when you are expecting to travel (assuming no more rain of course). I'd keep to the autostrada though. Can't help you with RDS. Have a good trip.

Sorry to keep going on about this but if there are people planning to visit or pass through the area, as is the case with "flanneruk" above (Bore da to you!)the news is that Italian Civil Defence has put out a warning for Monday 2nd June of further thunderstorms and therefore possible critical situations on the roads. Danger of landslides particularly in some of the side valleys. Some minor roads and passes have been reopened to alternating one-way traffic.
