Flooding Footwear for Venice
 

We will be in Venice in the middle of November. I hear that it can be rainy and when it is rainy, the sidewalks are very wet/flooded. Someone even recommended buying cheap plastic boots to wear while there and just trashing them vs. carrying them home. Anybody do something like this? Any recommendations for such boots? TIA!!

If there is acqua alta there will be plenty of vendors selling disposable boots and plastic coverings.

We were in Venice in late October to early November about ten years ago and there was flooding. I don't think we needed special boots though --- there were lots of wooden "duck-walks" wherever the water was high. I seem to recall getting off the vaporettos was mainly where the high water affected us. Maybe it's worse now because of climate change?

It happens when high tides coincide with full moons sometimes and can be predicted - just wait and see and buy cheap boots - and yes catwalks are put in places that flood - not all of the city does.

It is flooded now due to heavy rains and sirocco winds. In some places it is 1.5m deep. They put out wooden walkways but wellies are definitely a good idea just in case. In the photos I have seen people seem to be using plastic overshoes or maybe plastic bags. In any case they go nearly to the knee.

We, too, were there during floods. They come at certain times of the day and recede during the same day but may come again the following day. We just bought knee high plastic (I think in pink or blue) boots that just go on directly over your shoes and moved on. IME it did not effect the whole of Venice, just areas particularly low lying here and there. I would definitely no pack my own big boots on the chance that I might want them. The boots they sell run about 15 to 20 euros if I recall correctly. The purchase will be good for the local economy.

Can't always be predicted - onshore winds, heavy rain also contribute. Spring tides can be predicted obviously but the weather to go with them can't.

Oh dear...... well, let us hope and pray that the water subsides in 2 weeks. Yikes!!!! ok, will count on buying shoe covers there. Hopefully we won't need hip waders!

no high tides and full moons don't necessarily mean flooding as yes other factors are involved but chances are more likely in fall with a full moon which as bilbo learned causes high tides! I always thought it would be fun to see Venice flooded - well for a day maybe.

The time of year makes no difference - a full moon (or a new moon) means a spring tide which will be higher than a quarter moon neap tide. Other factors make spring tides dangerous.
