Flights to Croatia?

Hi,

I am trying to plan a trip for summer time from Houston TX to Split or Dubrovnik. Does anyone know the best way to do this, the cheapest, best city to fly into, etc? Thanks! I am hoping for 7-10 days, is that too much or not enough time?

We're from Houston too and couldn't find a very direct route. We ended up booking Air France using Continental miles from IAH to Paris, then connecting from there to Zagreb, and driving to Dubrovnik.

We fly from Canada to London to Zagreb, rent a car then travel through Istria (my favourite region), Plitvice Lakes, Trogir and Dubrovnik. As soon as we get to Dubrovnik we lose our rental car and fly from there to Zagreb.

Seven to ten days is very short for Croatia but enough for Split and Dubrovnik. You may want to see a couple of the islands, too. If you can I would really recommend you do Plitvice Lakes and Istria, too (including Rovinj and less touristy hilltowns of Hum, Bale, Groznjan, Draguc, etc.).

If you do Split I highly recommend Trogir which is close and a world UNESCO heritage site. I like it a lot better than Split although Split warrants a visit. However, since you are going in summer, Trogir (and everywhere else) will be extremely crowded (especially Dubrovnik).

You can easily fly from Dubrovnik to Zagreb (cheap) then home. It saves a day driving which leaves you more time for exploring. :)

We flew from Chicago to Dubrovnik via London. I have seen flights that layover in Paris and Vienna as well. Not the easiest country to get to, but so worth the effort!

We will go from St. Louis - JFK -London Heathrow. Then we must CHANGE to London Gatwick for the British Air flight to Dubrovnik. The change is tight (only 3:15 hr and we must change to Gatwick which takes an hour).

We are using Free Air miles with AA so this was our only option.

The British Air flight from Gatwick leaves at 10:00 a/m daily directly to Dubrovnik.

You can fly to Gatwick Lon & then to Split on Easyjet usually cheapest. but I do not think they have next year schedules yet.

Venice is a great place to kick off the holiday if you have the time to take in quite a bit of Croatia.

nannibray, make sure you continue to monitor your flights with AA. We flew on AA as well, and had a 4 hour layover to switch from Heathrow to Gatwick. Two months before our flight I get on AA to check our reservations and noticed that they were changed, leaving us with only 2 hours to make the connection. Obviously this wouldn't work so I called AA and we ended up having to leave a day earlier and stay the night in London to make the connection. I never received notification of the change, so now I make a habit to check any flight reservations almost weekly.

By the way, I'm from St. Louis as well. I now live in Charlotte, having moved here two years ago, but St. Louis will always be home. I lived in Glen Carbon, IL, just across the river to the north.

Thanks for the "tip" on AA Tracy. I will continue to check on the reservations. I actually live in Alton, Il. Have enjoyed your other posts and also your pictures. You sure have travelled a lot!!

Thanks nannibray! Travel is my passion, so I try to do it as often as I can. Next stop is Turkey in February!

You will LOVE Croatia! It really is fabulous. The flights were a pain, but it is so worth it.

Another southern Illinoisan! I am very familiar with Alton.

Best wishes,
Tracy
