Taking duty-free liquor into Madrid from US

Next week we will be flying from Atlanta to Madrid. If I buy a bottle of liquor at the duty free, can I be sure of keeping it once I arrive in Madrid?

Yes, but:

1. You may import as much as you like. But you have to pay import duty (trivial) booze tax (less trivial) and VAT (not at all trivial) on anything over 1 litre

2. You may not take bottles through airport security in your hand baggage, unless they've been bought in Europe and put into special sealed security bags at the duty free checkout. So if you've bought them at an airside duty free in the US, you may not take them onto a connecting flight in Europe. You'll be fine on a non-stop flight from Atlanta to Madrid: you'll not if you have to change planres - say at Barcelona or London.

3. Are you sure US duty free is cheaper than a US supermarket? If it's not, it might just be easier to pack store-bought booze securely in your checked bags.

or buy it in Spain where it MIGHT be cheaper.

Here is a simple link to some offers now at El Corte Inglés so you can have an idea of prices here.
