Flights from US East coast to Venice

Hi:
My wife and are are heading over to Italy - May 2011.
Currently reside near in Raleigh, NC. We are planning on initially flaying into Venice, touring Italy (3 weeks), and then meeting some friends in Paris, and returning to the US from there.

Looking at direct flight options, it looks like US Airways has a direct from from PHL to Venice, and Delta from JFK.

Have never flown overseas via JFK or PHL so not sure how much time to allow for a connecting flight. Would have to get an AM flight out of RDU up to either one in any case.

Does anyone have any input on either of these airlines or airports (plus or minus) for going to Venice?

Thanks,
Ken

This is the kind of question a good travel agent could answer in about 45 seconds, but most of us don't use travel agents any more.

Here are some things to think about.

Which airline is in an alliance with American so you can get miles for the entire distance in one program?

Is the Delta flight a Delta flight or is it a code share? With whom? I tend to think the USAir flight will not be a codeshare since PHL is their major hub.

What kind of aircraft is each airline using? We don't even consider Continental any more, whatever their price and schedule, since they have switched over to 757's. These are dogs on long flights in the US, and I can't imagine flying one all the way to Europe, though BOS-KFL is okay. Our recent Boston-Rome flight on an Airbus had very comfortable seats and modestly better than average legroom. It maks a huge difference on a 9-10 hour flight, esp if you are 6'3" like me.

If you can get a flight with a nonstop over-the-Atlantic portion, it will be much better than changing planes in Europe, so you are asking the right questions.

We flew USAir to Venice in Sept. 2009 and used our frequent flier points plus paid $300 each to up-grade to Envoy class. We're within a 3 hr. driving distance to Phila. so that was the deciding factor for us. Plus we don't like flying out of JFK.

To make your traveling day a little easier, you might want to consider flying to Phila. and staying overnight in one of the motels near the airport which has free transportation to the airport.

Another option is to fly to a European hub then connect to Venice from there. Are there any non-stop flights from RDU to London, Munich, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt?

Thanks for the replies !
Looks like both airlines are operating 767 on the non-stops and both are non-code share flights.

Sort off leaning toward PHL. Possibly staying overnight the night before outbound.

Any recommendations for mid-price hotels near the airport in PHL ?

We have stayed at the Hampton Inn, (Phila. airport) twice and it's been fine. The room was clean and quiet.

Plus there was a Ruby Tuesday's just across the parking lot. Not the greatest restaurant but it was fine for one night.

You need to have all flights on a single ticket so that is there are any delays the airline, rather than you - are responsible for getting you where you are going.

Can;t comment on Philly. But for JFK you will need to check in for an international flight at least 2 hours in advance - which means you should land at JFK at least 4 hours (and I would feel safer with at least 5 hours) before your flight to europe is scheduled. When looking at flights determine the usual on-time arrival record of you incoming flight. Also - if you are checking luggage be sure to allow time for delays in delivery. (If possible have your luggage checked all the way through to Venice at the time of your first flight.)

Looking a bit more on US Air:
Outbound:
RDU->PHL 11:30 AM Arrive PHL 12:55 PM
PHL->VCE 6:25 PM Arrive 9:10 AM

Inbound:
CDG->CLT 11:10 AM Arrive CLT 2:25 PM
CLT->RDU 4:18 PM Arrive RDU 5:15 PM
Thanks again for the information.

Outbound - we have a few hours in between flights but that gives us some bandwidth in getting up to PHL from RDU. May still consider leaving a day early to get to PHL and stay overnight.

Inbound 1:45 between flights. If we get delayed coming into CLT US Air still has some flights later that night from CLT to RDU.
