My response would be, yes, definitely. We visited Hauterives on our way from Grenoble to Avignon and it was a modest detour through rather attractive countryside. Once there, the palais is well worth seeing.

It looks pretty wild. And the story is weird. It's the type of quirky thing I would go out of my way for. If you're taking the autoroute to Annecy I would make the short detour. But please report back on this palace! I'd be interested in hearing more about it.

I really rely on Underhill for his knowledge of France and I am glad to reciprocate on this one thing. I think it is a fantastical palace(all different architecture) built by Postman Ferdinand Cheval from pebbles gathered on his daily rounds. A friend who lived in France told me about it.
