flight help $961 Chi-Man-EDI-London

I'm looking for any suggestions on getting a better airfare than this from Kayak.com

I'm coming up with 961USD for our agenda-
10/25/07 Chicago to Manchester
10/29 Manchester to Edinburgh
11/01 Edinburgh to London
11/05 London to Chicago

Going to soccer games in Manchester, so those dates are firm. Then want to spend some time in London and Edinburgh, so there's some flexibility there.

I was hoping to find something between 650 and 800? Any suggestions appreciated.

And many other choices in the $600s to $700s range.

10/29 Manchester-Edinburgh train starts from £12 ($24)

Or fly BMI from £30.8 ($62) or flybe from £29.99 ($61).

11/1 Edinburgh to London. Train from £15.7 ($31)

Or fly easyjet to EDI-LGW/STN/LUT for £18.99 ($38), or BMI EDI-LHR for £30 ($60).

Keep in mind that the express trains from any of the London airports to Central london cost around £15; basically same fare as riding it from Edinburgh.

So, $643 open-jaw airfare + $24 train + $31 train = just under $700.

I personally wouldn't fly MAN > EDI. W/ advance check in and the hassles of flying, a train would be just as fast (or maybe faster door to door) and would save you $$.

Just about the same w/ EDI > London. City centre to city centre is faster by train than flying.

How does open jaw ORD > MAN and LGW or LHR > ORD price out?

<<< or flybe from £29.99 ($61). >>>

DON'T, folk at my place have to fly between Manchester & Edinburgh for work, FlyBe is VERY unreliable

BUT I have to agree, the best way to Edinburgh is by train.

See www.virgintrains.com and book in advance for best fares - you'll need to use a UK postcode to register and change that to your home address before booking. You then have to use the Fasticket option to collect the tickets which you can pick up at Manchester Piccadilly once you arrive in the UK - you'll need the card you used for the booking and the reference number you were given with the booking

I'd also do Edinburgh to London by train - a day train can cost as little as £15.80 and can be booked at the same time as you book the train to Edinburgh. You can also collect them at Manchester at the same time

Make sure you book the trains in advance like alanRow says. Huge huge difference between advanced and walkup fares.

We flew a similar route this past August (BOS to MAN to EDI to LHR to BOS). But we didn't stay over in Manchester. Flew on AA and Flybe (had no problems) to EDI. Think it cost about $900 (with the return from LHR). We paid separately for EDI to LHR (on British Air BMI). That cost about $70 per person. I chose this flight over trains as we wanted to fly as early as possible to London and the trains would have gotten us there later.
