FLEMISH????????????

Does any one here speak or read Flemish( I think. Pleae translate for me i think it may just be a receipt for mail I sent but I don't know
Dit is een bevestiging voor de e-mail die u verzonden hebt naar
<[email protected]> om 30-04-2001 19:28

Deze bevestiging geeft aan dat het bericht is weergegeven op het scherm van de ontvanger om 30-04-2001 18:20

Flemish = Vlaams = Nederlands = Dutch - - for all practical purposes.

I think you're probably right.

www.travlang.com says that "bevestiging" = confirmation. I suppose you can work on it word for word there.

Or wait for Sjoerd tomorrow.

If you really need it, you could consider sending him an e-mail. Not that hard to find his e-mail address.

Best wishes,

Rex

Dries Apr 30th, 2001 09:05 PM

Jody- You are right: the first part is a receipt of the e-mail you sent; the second a receipt that your note was returned (weergeven) to the "screen" (computer) of the receiver.

Myriam Apr 30th, 2001 11:25 PM

Hi Jody, Pleased to introduce myself: I am Myriam and yes, I am FLEMISH!!!
Translation is as follows: this is a confirmation for the e-mail you sent to <[email protected]> on April 30, 2001 7.28 pm. This confirmation states that your message has been displayed on receiver's screen on April 30, 2001 6.20 pm.

Rex, there is a difference between Dutch and Flemish. Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands, Flemish is spoken in Flanders (the northern part of Belgium). The two languages are very alike but the sound is different and when I use our typical Flemish wording I don't think anyone in the Netherlands would understand. Just for your information!

Sjoerd Apr 30th, 2001 11:45 PM

Not to start a Dutch-Flemish war here, but Flemish is NOT a different language but a dialect of Dutch.
Dutch has many different strong dialects which are hard to understand for a speaker of "standard" Dutch.

MAny thanks to all of you. I had requested a hotel reservation and wanted to make sure that this wasn't the confirmation of that. I got another letter this morning ( in English!) confirming our dates. We are doing a short, 3 day , world War 1 battlefield trip while in France this year.Staying in Ypres (Ieper), it is such a pretty little town and though we've done this before , it is always especially moving and interesting.
Again Thanks to all

Olga May 1st, 2001 06:29 AM

Jody,

what else is included in your WWI trip? We will be in that area in about 3 weeks for a few days and were planning to visit Ypres since one of my daughters is very interested in history and WWI in particular.

Thanks in advance

Olga

Jody May 1st, 2001 07:48 AM

This will be our 3rd trip to the WW1 , battlefields, 2nd time in this area of the somme. There are serveral really good museums , Albert, Perrone and Ypres. The In Flanders Field mus. is new and exceptionally well laid out. In addition several of the battlefields and cemeteries have guided tours. The canadian tour of the trenches at Vimy Ridge stands out. This will be an incrediblly moving experience. Off on the sides oroads, on hilltops, and fields you will see little clusters of beautifully manitained gravesites. The men were often buried where they fell. The British Graves Commission who maintain these sites deserve highest praise. If you know of someone who is buried there they will send you the exact site. My husband's uncle is there and we were given the exact location. He had always promised his mother he would visit someday. She met my father-in-law, who was in Canadian army, while searching for another of her brothers who was wounded and in hospital somewhere in France. We always teased her that she was a WW1 war-bride!
Some of the poetry on the memorials will have tears running down your face. The one I remember most is to The Devon's- "The Devon's held this trench, they hold it still"
There are also several tour compaies which operate from Ypres, Salient Tours is one and I will have to look the other up for you. They do long and short tours. We have never used them, doing it on our own, but this trip we will.
Hope this helps.

Just topping this up for Olga

Olga May 1st, 2001 11:01 AM

Jody, thank you so much!!! This will make for a much more memorable tour. We will probably also drive around on our own. I will look the places you mentioned on the map... Will investigate the tour company also.

Thanks again, and have a great time!!

Olga

Sjoerd, Re: "Not to start a Dutch-Flemish war here, but Flemish is NOT a different language but a dialect of Dutch."

Thanks for that info, Sjoerd, as I'd always been unclear about the distinction between the two.

Francesca May 2nd, 2001 03:26 AM

JODY-
We are planning a smiliar trip, do you know of any really good hotels in this area?

Tracy May 2nd, 2001 03:35 AM

Hey! Try this: after several Belgian beers, read Flemish out loud . . . as a native English speaker, you'll start to understand it!

But after several Belgian beers, *everything* starts to make sense . . .
= )

Jody May 2nd, 2001 04:07 AM

Francesca- We stayed at a very nice hotel on Mont Kimmel, just outside Ypres, as i recall it was called the Mont Kimmel at Kimmelberg, This trip we are staying at the Ariane in the town so hope it is good too. When we did the battlefields around Verdun, we stayed in Epernay at the royal Champagne, one of the nicest hotels we've ever stayed at and it was also great for touring the vineyards and tasting champagnes!
Tracy- That sounds like a good thread to start..your favorite Belgian beers, Lord they must hav e100"S!! My husbands favorite was something called Quack or Quark or something like that!!

Gloria May 2nd, 2001 05:11 AM

Jody, I have the CORRECT translation of our message:
"Ms.Jody, you are required to bring Gloria on this trip or you will be denied access to this country."
I will send you an email as to where you may send my ticket and trip details.
Looking forward to "our" trip! Thanks!
Gloria

Jody May 2nd, 2001 08:36 AM

GLORIA- Having read some of your postings , you sound like a fun person to travel with BUT I had to use all my wiles just to get my husband to spring for 2 tickets, don't know if my wiles would be up to 4!!Thank God the market has recovered a little !!!!!

andre May 2nd, 2001 08:46 AM
