I agree as to Camden Town on Saturdays.

On Sunday mornings there is a market at the north end of Brick Lane, near Shoreditch and Liverpool Street tube stations, and then if you like Mexican and spicy food you can lunch on curry on Brick Lane. If you ask me I can e mail you a note about kinds of curry.

On Fridays and Saturdays there is a good market at Greenwich. Train from Charing Cross or London Bridge to Greenwich station (on the world s oldest commuter railway), go out, turn left, look right for the old town hall, go in for Art Deco at fair prices, and then on towards the river, with stalls on your right.

There is a geographical guide to antique dealers across London at http://www.lapada.co.uk/buysell/buylon.html/, but they are all expensive for you.

You ask where to stay. The markets make a spread, Camden Town, Brick Lane, Greenwich, and you reach them from hotels by tube, train, or even boat, so all you want is a list of hotels under a hundred dollars a night, with forum readers comments. This I can easily e mail you for Victoria, Charing Cross, and Bloomsbury, if you ask me. Again, shall I e mail you a note of what forum readers see as typical sightseeing? Then, to be more personal, have the two of you built up hobbies, interests, or professions ? If you care to tell me, I can think whether London has places, not at all typical sightseeing, that would take your fancy.

Welcome to London

Antique (?) dealers scour the countryside for merchandise. Get a recommendation from someone about a market to visit other than in London. Check the days and hours they operate. Take an early train. Major Polish cities have a plethora of galleries, shops and markets. The main street (Piotrkowska) in Lodz has many. I counted 14 in a telephone directory.

You've gotten good advice hollyjoy. Priceline is the answer to getting a good hotel at a decent price. It sounds confusing but if you read biddingfortravel a few times under the hotel faq section you'll get it.

While I don't want to discourage you on the antiques front, London will be so expensive (the exchange rate with the dollar is awful). I think you'd be better off waiting til you get to one of your other destinations. But I know the "hunt" can be fun so here's links to a few other threads here with more info. I've often found that if you don't know all the "ins and outs" of an area, you can miss what you came for :)

Since no one has talked about what to see while in London, I'll mention you should go to the Tower of London (get there first thing when they open). Take the Beefeater's tour and see the crown jewels. If you will be there in September, Buckingham Palace is open to the public then. Go to their website and book in advance.

Many museums are free in London!! I think you'd like the V & A (Victoria and Albert) and the gift shop there always has nice things big and small. I also like the National Portrait Gallery. It's got everyone from Kings and Queens to the Beatles!

Many people like to do the "hop on hop off" bus tour to get "the lay of the land" when they first arrive.

By the way, I've heard the Azores are just beautiful. Enjoy your trip.

Hello All-
Thanks so very much for the additional replies to my post. Have decided to go with Priceline for a hotel..will be doing that very soon. I've decided to stay a few days in Lisbon also..on my way back to the States.
All the information given about the markets has been wonderful. We are going to have such a great time. I know the antiques will be expensive. I'll be happy to come home with a few special pieces. I'm hoping to find some cream and green enamelware...which I collect. Tala or Worchester Ware....Old kitchen type stuff, molds, pottery, jars...that's what we'll be looking for. Going for the atmosphere too...love to people watch.
Sightseeing...I'm not so worried about. We've decided on Buckingham Palace, at least one of the museaums...Harrods, of course...just have to do that...I'm hoping to do lots of park walking. The Tower of London for sure. Food isn't big on my list...I'm a light eater..lots of veggies, fruit, rice....simple stuff. SORRY...no fish and chips for me. Last time I had Indian food....got really sick..so I'm not sure I'll be eating much curry.
You have all been so great! I'm SO GLAD I found this site.....THANK YOU!
I'll be sure to post a trip report when I get back!!
