Flamenco poetry in Seville in September
On the 19th of September you might be up for a night of pure flamenco poetry in Sevilla. Then the baile genious Rocío Molina stages her new performance at the grand Teatro de la Maestranza during Spain’s largest and most important flamenco festival. Last year, The New York Times presented Molina as one of the finest dancers in the world. Legendary Russian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov kneeled in front of her after a performance in New York City Center in February. I saw the upcoming performance twice in Madrid in May, and it left me with no option but to book my tickets for this night as well. Twenty-six year old Molina scatters all conceptions of traditional flamenco by paying tribute and making it new. As Financial Times wrote after her latest performance in New York: “She does to flamenco what Picasso did to the female nude”.

Here she is in a more traditional concert in Barcelona in May: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E5ZE3nqUl4

Kimhe - just looked up your name hoping I could find you in case you don't come back to my thread.
We will be in Madrid on the night of April 12. Do you know/recommend any flamenco that night?
Thanks.

On the 12th of April the madrileña Guadalupe Torres dances at Cardamomo. She recently won a prestigious flamenco prize for her coreographic work and she obviously is a wonderful dancer. Here in a clip together with our own Norwegian flamenco star, the guitarist Bettina Flater:

Torres used to dance in the company of María Pagés (as did Rocío Molina), and she is now starting to get serious attention in the flamenco community. She has also recently worked with Molina: http://www.flamencotv.es/component/k...af%C3%ADa.html
Cardamomo is just off central and bustling Plaza Santa Ana: http://www.cardamomo.es/

Kimhe - I am so glad to have found you. Hope you see this since this thread was a while ago.
I did see Rocio Molina in Bilbao at Birakaldo. She is absolutely incredibly amazing. Unfortunately, I needed to head back to San Sebastian on the 10PM bus and the theater was so dark that I couldn't see what time it was. Ended up leaving the hall at 8:50 and was nervous about making it to the bus on time so left the performance. I was kicking myself because I was 45 minutes early for the bus!!!!!
As for Torres - I did see her at Cardomomo and loved her but Molina wins in my book.
If I had know that Linon was going to dance that night, I would have gone to see him. Saw him in New York last winter - he and Molina were the 2 who blew me away.
I just want to thank you once again for all the help, guidance, advise you have given me in planning this trip.
We had a great time and I would go back in a heart beat!

Glad to hear you had good flamenco experiences, but sorry for the stress at the Molina performance. She is in a league of her own. Got fantastic reviews for "Danzaora". She did it again in the Picasso museum in Málaga the week after you saw her in Bilbao. Sold out for months, and the leading newspaper El País wrote about "The spirit of two centuries of dance". http://www.elpais.com/articulo/andal...7elpand_11/Tes
The local newspaper Málaga Hoy reported about an audience out of breath and the whole auditorium on their feet. http://www.malagahoy.es/article/ocio...fin/ciclo.html
It seems to have been one of those very rare moments. I had tickets, but was unable to go because of work. I think I saw what was coming...

Oh well...you are lucky to have her and flamenco so easily accessible. Without work we couldn't afford to have these wonderful experiences.
I wrote to her web site address wondering if she would be in New York any time but never heard from them.
There is an annual flamenco festival here so will be on the lookout for her and for Linan as well. I am not very familiar with dancers, just know what I like when I see it. Flamenco reaches something thrilling and deep inside.
Thanks again.

Tickets started to sell four days ago. Given the fantastic reviews from the Málaga performance, I think you should go for it. Teatros del Canal is very nice, saw her here twice last May in "Cuando las piedras vuelen".

I like that theater. Not a bad seat anywhere. I'm trying to get someone to go with me.. as there are still web fares for the AVE from Valencia.. which I haven't tried out yet! Maybe see you there. Who knows?

Lin,
Appears as if she's staging a brand new performance in Madrid inspired by wine and the dionysic, in her word games world it's called "Vinática": http://www.rociomolina.com/lang-es/agenda.html
She alluded to this coming "wine performance" in an interview some weeks ago: http://www.larioja.com/v/20110407/cu...-20110407.html

I'm in. Got three tickets. A Spanish friend is coming with me from Valencia, and perhaps a Madrid friend. Got her a ticket anyway so we could sit together if she comes. Will know that soon. First row in the second section, center. great seats, but for anyone reading this, all seats are good in this theater. It is comparatively intimate.
Let me know if you will be there, kihme We could have a drink there beforehand.

Lin,
Sorry I can't join you in Madrid, but I have to arrange things to go and see Molina in Córdoba on the 10th of July. Pretty sure you are up for a great night: http://www.flamencotv.es/es/actualid...-absoluto.html
Goldiept,
Some Spanish newspapers says she will bring "Vinática" to New York in a not too distant future.
