Flamenco in Granada
 

Has anyone been to this particular show in Granada? We don't have that much time there and I am thinking it would be best to save Flamenco for Sevilla. Our host has suggested this for Oct. 10th. The cave setting sounds interesting and intimate. Thanks for any information.

You should see one in both cities. In La Cueva you will see the deepest of the Gypsy style, cante jondo. You will never forget the setting or the experience. In Sevilla you will see a more "refined" style, both are the real deal even though nowadays it's all for tourists.

But the Sacromonte caves will of course be a special setting and experience, but very touristy.

In Sevilla, I recommend Casa de la Memoria or La Casa del Flamenco, both intimate places with just top of the shelf artists. No food, no drinks, just flamenco. The sevillana Pastora Galvan was voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics, and she has danced almost once a week in Casa de la Memoria for many years.

And almost daily flamenco performances in both Granada and Sevilla, from small peñas (flamenco clubs) to grand theaters, where you'll be togehther with a mostly local and knowledgeable crowd. And flamenco is very much about the communication between the artists and the audience. Events are posted on guiaflama.com

And in Sevilla, you have the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances in Flamenqueria by the river in Triana, the old flamenco district in Sevilla. And every Wednesday at 9pm they stage a young and promising dancer together with a singer and guitarist. http://www.flamenqueria.es/es/

A relatively new venue, haven't been here, but will definitely go next time in Sevilla. Some of the greatest artists also give courses here, and web-page in Spanish only. And the most cutting edge female flamenco dancer in the world, Sevilla based Rocio Molina, had auditions here when she looked for an extra male dancer for her latest creation, magical Bosque Ardora.

What I'm trying to say is that Flamenqueria might very well be your best bet to have a genuine flamenco experience while in Granada and Sevilla.
