Try Seville.

I think you may have trouble finding flamenco in Barcelona... it's not really native to Catalunya.

See Maribel's Guide for Flamenco suggestions in Barcelona including Poble Espanyol at Tablao de Carmen www.tablaodecarmen.com - show with drink costs 27 Euros. Also a new flamenco bar, Soniquete, on Carrer Milans 5 near the Placa Reial open Thurday to Sunday.

Hey Africa!

I have not personally been to Tablao Carmen Amaya, but since Lily suggested it I thought I might suggest you read up or see one of the excellent films or documentries about the life of Carmen Amaya, for whom it's named.

While BCN is not as known as a Flamenco Hub as Jerez & Sevilla are, Carmen Amaya was indeed one of THE MOST respected flamenco artists ever, and yes she was born a poor gypsy in Barcelona. She started dancing on the streets of Barcelona at age 7 and became of of the most influential dancers in the history of the artform. She perfomed for years with the famed guitarist Sabicas. They are both legends in Flamenco.

You might want to rent either Los Tarantos (approx 1963/64) which showed her very last performance before her premature death at 50. There are also some great books and documetries on her life you may enjoy to enrich the experience in the Tablao. (or take up time on the plane ride)

Let us know how it is & have a great time!
