BBgt, it was an all-day trip from Scotland. We thought it was easier by train than going to the airport early and then having to get from the Plymouth airport to the train to go on to Penzance, and we enjoyed seeing the sea views and the countryside, as well.>>

NB - there is no airport any more at Plymouth; it went under about 2 years ago. but Carolyn makes a good point - the railway line from Exeter to Penzance is exceptionally lovely in places and Flybe does fly to Exeter airport - in fact it's its HQ.

Carolyn - it's good to read that your host looked up the tides - so important with any water based activity here - and that on the island they made you aware of when you had to leave. I have a friend who used to be part of the security on the island who has a story about racing across the causeway in his Land Rover with the water coming over the tops of the tyres. When the tide comes in, it comes in FAST!

Hi Carolyn - Thanks for addressing my question so thoroughly - and Ann, too! I did see that there is a direct flight from Edinburgh to Exeter with Flybe. Our next trip won't be for a year or two, but I'll be sure to refer to your trip report when the time comes (and it will come). I love that you and Janis were crossing paths. Wouldn't it be fun to bump into another Fodorite on a trip?

BBgt, I have been to a few Kentucky/Indiana Fodor get-togethers, and a couple in London, but I haven't met Janis (yet) and would love to. They are great fun if you ever get a chance to join in. It was a toss up for us deciding whether to walk from the South Kensington tube stop to our hotel over that weekend or fight the mobs for a one-stop tube ride. Mostly we walked.
