Fiumicino taxi scam

O.K. so this is nothing new, but just a heads up for anyone going to Rome.

If you plan on using a taxi from FCO rather than a pre-booked limo, be very careful to fix a price first.

There is an ongoing scam (recently reported in the Italian press), of taxi drivers charging €200+ for a ride into Rome. (The normal rate is € 35-50)

28 taxi drivers (!) are currently under police investigation for this. Prime targets are foreign tourists, especially Americans, not conversant with the currency.

Fix a price ... and watch your change.

Sorry, Steve, the normal rate for Rome's city-center has been $60 for years. It may be even more now.

You are both right, kind of. US$60 at today's rate is EUR 47. I agree with Steve-james that the fare range is EUR 35-50 depending on your destintation in central Rome.

My apologies, Steve. I neglected to notice the Euro symbol. I often read too fast.

I always set the price with the driver before I put myself or my bags in the cab. They charge for luggage and night service, but otherwise they can give you a set price.

Last year, three of us bargained with a driver and went straight to P. Navona for 40euro, so it was about right.

I don't think that overcharging tourists is unique to Rome. The same thing happens in many large US Cities as well

We used a limo arranged by the hotel to meet us at the airport and take us to the hotel The fare was 50 eur. The return trip was also arranged by the hotel and the fare was the same. By the way how do I get the euro sign on my computer?
