Mainhattengirl - I agree wholeheartedly - I have taken those boats zillions of times leading groups and I am always rivetted to the passing scenes - but I know that many of my charges got bored quickly and others on the boat seemed to as well... yup I feel sorry for them too.

Yes it is not the castles or towns - nice as they are - that intrigue me on The Father Rhine - it's also the workaday aspect of one of Europe's most used and vital waterways - this is why I'd rather do a boat ride on the Rhine - the might Rhine than the Mother Mosel - where you have relatively little commerical ship traffic - at least compared to the Rhine - lovelier scenery I think all in all but all the same.

Looking at my last question, I see I did not make it clear that I need advice on whether it would be worth the effort to go back to St. Goar (after seeing Marksburg and Braubach) to spend more time there before going on the train back to Bingen. The two hours we would spend in St. Goar earlier that day does not seem like enough time. I would have liked to be able to go back from there on the boat but there are no later departures past the 17:20, so in any event we will return to Bingen by train.

You can make that decision on your day of travel if you want. With the R-P ticket you could linger there through the evening if you like. St. Goar is at one of the most scenic spots on the river and is nice in the evenings as the setting sun hits Katz Castle and the hills on the opposite river bank. But St. Goar itself is pretty small and sights are few - it's mostly just a nice place to hang out and to stroll for a bit. (I understand that at present there's some construction underway so it may not be quite as special when you're there. You may wish to cross over in St. Goar, then board a train south to Bingen, stopping in Oberwesel for a walk along the old town wall if there's extra time in your day.

St. Goar is a nice little town. But Germany has many such places. IMO 2hours will be ample for a walkabout. If you want to see the castle ruins then it is minimum half hour mostly uphill walk from the dock. For me, the juiice is not worth the squeeze,

Mainhatten gal - what do you think of Koblenz and Deutsches Eck - does that spit of land at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine really that evocative to Germans as I am led to believe.

Just wondering if you are familiar with Koblenz and what you think of it and Deutsches Eck?

Thank you all again for your valuable advice. I suppose there isn't a way to get up to Rheinfels like there is for Marksburg. Let me know where to catch the shuttle (or whatever it may be called) in St. Goar.

From the Ferry dock turn right walking towards town. You will come to a typical German town square. The shuttle is made to look like a little train - it leaves from there - it is a few euro. I do not know the schedule, but as far as I recall, there is only one, so if you miss it you must wait for its return.
