fitting in fashion

I am so excited to leave for Rome in just 1 1/2 weeks! My husband surprised me with the trip for our anniversary. But the problem is, we're so far from fashionable and we don't want to "stand out" while we're there. Can anyone tell us what they're wearing in Rome? Thank you so much!

Don't worry about being fashionable. You are going to see tourists from all over the world dressed in a variety of getups. I just returned from Milan and orange is a really big color for fall. Jeans are always good. Plan out your activities, check the weather, and dress accordingly. My favorite traveling outfit is black pants, white T-shirt, and a jeans jacket.

Just wear your normal casual clothes. For men and women both I think neat pants and a top, with comfortable shoes and a lightweight jacket or sweater is a pretty good bet. Stick to neutral colors and fabrics that pack well. Not knowing how long the trip is, I would suggest packing something like: 3 pair pants, 7 shirts or tops, 1 jacket or sweater, 2 pair shoes, 1 nicer outfit for evenings, undies/socks, maybe a sun hat. No need to try to dress like Italians do.

Just wear whatever you are comfy in, footwear being the most important, as you will walk the legs off yourself in rome!
T-shirts and jeans, with trainers, and a light cardi or jacket for the odd shower! enjoy

This is a FAQ on so many forums that I made a web page with my own take on the answer: http://www.straughan.com/italy/travel/dressing.htm

Imr, I think many of us balance the challenge of packing light with being comfortable plus looking fashionable everytime we travel. You have to decide which is the most important. I love the look of my 3 inch heels with wool trousers for winter but they sure wouldn't take me very far or comfortably sightseeing in Paris or Rome and I'd have to wear them on the plane because they sure would take up too much space in a suitcase ;;) so I leave them at home (big sigh). I am guessing you will need layers for cool and warm weather during the time you will be there and something for rain. If you don't have "the" scarf yet, buy one as soon as you get to Italy, throw it on when it gets cooler and anything you wear will look fashionable (except jogging suits) ;;) Happy Anniversary and have a wonderful trip. I'm a fashion fiend and I was amazed at how casual everyone in Rome is! Jeans are the uniform. And this time of year, you'll probably have a light jacket on. And of course comfy walking shoes. I dressed every day like I would dress running to the grocery store here at home. I even packed slightly dressier things just in case, but never needed them.

Fashion....what's that ? :))

Seriously, I just try to be confortable when travelling, from head to shoes :) And I usually dress as I do at home..jeans and a t-shirt or a blouse to be a bit more "dressy".
