Fish n chips
Does Geals still have the best fish n chips in London?
|
Still? About four years ago we went there and after they lost our order twice and we had waited nearly an hour -- they brought us fish that was just OK, but the coldest, greasiest, soggiest chips I've ever seen.
My favorite is Rock and Sole Plaice near Neal's Yard in Covent Garden. |
A change in manegement about 6 years ago seems to have negatively impacted their consistency. I was there last Nov and it was as good as I recall when I first went in the 70's. Others have not had such a good experience. It may matter which day of the week you go. I was there on a Friday. Another favourite is Seashell, at Lisson Grove, near Marleybone Station. Any cabbie can take you there. Have not tried Rock & Soul, but plan to this spring. (Thanks Patrick) Rich |
Another vote for the Rock and Sole Plaice. We were there in October and the fish n chips were fabulous!
|
Patrick, Sounds like you had a really bad experience. I don't know if I've just been lucky, but I've never had a bad meal there. We were there in March, 2002(2 meals), December, 2002 (2 meals) and June, 2003(2 meals) and had great fish and chips every time.
I'm also a big fan of the Seashell in Lisson Grove. On my next trip, I hope to try Rock and Sole Plaice and another one I've heard good reviews on - North Sea Fish Restaurant. |
sea shells is our favorite...very low key...well worth the sort of out of the way address..

The best fish 'n' chips in London?
The Golden Hind, est. 1914, found on 73 Marylebone Lane. Buy a bottle of wine around the corner first. |
Here's another vote for the Seashell Restaurant. Haven't tried Rock & Sole Plaice in Covent Garden but plan to next trip.
|
Not in London, but Johansson's Dining House in Westminster, Maryland, USA makes a great fish and chips platter.
|
The Golden Hind's chips are scrumptious!
|
"buy a bottle of wine first". hey, gekko, surely you jest. who would drink wine with fish and chips in England? read my lips, "best bitter please".
|
Another vote for the Golden Hind!
|
earl30, make that a pint of cider, please.

The Golden Hind doesn't serve alcohol of any kind and the only convenient liquor vendor is a wine shop around the corner. Hence my advice to "buy a bottle of wine first."
The wine shop's proprietor, by the way, will show you several options that go very well with the Golden Hind's fish 'n' chips. Enjoy! |
Peter's...a scuzzy little take-away joint by Victoria coach station. You can order haddock, plaice, or cod. Order the cod, of course.
In Richmond, The Prince of Wales Pub, "great cod almighty" in front of the fireplace with a pint of their finest lager. Hoo-Ha! |
"The Golden Hind, est. 1914, found on 73 Marylebone Lane. Buy a bottle of wine around the corner first." Is that the Golden Hind across the street from the Prince Alfred Pub ?? Used it often in the 80's when I lived in London, but checked it out around '95 and it had significantly changed . . had morphed into a restruant, and was not nearly as good as when it was a frying house . .
