Kja, I felt the same. Lausanne was absolutely easy to navigate (with a printed map) and I enjoyed my time there VERY much.
I certainly wouldn't go there without a printed map -- but then, I don't travel anywhere without a paper map. :) |
My statement about Lausanne being hard to navigate is not an assumption - it is based on well over 50 years experience of going to and getting around Lausanne - which is an hour by train from my home and where I have friends. it is easier now that the metro exists but what makes getting around hard is the old Flon river bed which bisects the town cutting across the hillside it is located on so there are various and sudden changes in level and you cannot tell from a map which level you are on. The metro helps a lot with this but I still - after all this time - find Lausanne confusing. And so do others which is why it is fair to warn people about it. |

The only thing in this area which is actually really confusing is the LEB commuter train.

Thought I would follow up a bit on some the wonderful food we had while there. Breakfast was usually croissants and coffee to get us going, simple but so good.
Lunch tended to be wherever we happened to be but one place stood out, Christian Boillat, a small patisserie we stumbled upon. Nice sandwiches with crusty bread and the most delicious vanilla mille feuille we've ever tasted. In fact even the sandwiches at the central station stand were excellent and so reasonable. We had dinner our first night at Cafe Romand, a 3 minute walk from our hotel. We ordered salmon with tomato basil sauce and a grilled chicken with morels. Both dishes were very well done, tasty and pleasing to the eye. We sat near the serving station eyeing the food that came out of the kitchen, saying wow that looks good, stopping our waiter to ask what it was. The most interesting dish that many patrons were ordering was a steaming platter of sausages, bacon, pork chops over sauerkraut, boiled potato and mustard. As I was looking at that the Mrs. watched me and said, you're coming back to eat that right. Yes we did and even she admitted it was wonderful on a chilly evening!!! Another dinner was at our hotel at Brasserie Grand Chene. We were originally set to go to Amici but our reservation was at 9:30 and around 8:00 the Mrs. was getting hungry and just a bit grumpy. So we checked and got the last table available in the restaurant. Food was very good as was the excellent service, steak frites for me and fish soup and a large salad for my wife. One other thing to note were all the chocolate shops in town, L'Espace and Durig come to mind but there were quite a few others. We'd be wandering around and if I didn't see the Mrs. I would find her browsing in the nearest chocolatier. I must admit the Swiss chocolates were really good, this coming from someone who doesn't eat many sweets. |

We found a Christian Boillat in St Prex, yum! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0509ac235.jpeg Delicious! |
No strawberries in ours, I’m jealous. Those layers of pastry were just fantastic though! |
You make me hungry! Great descriptions. The plate with sausages, ham etc over sauerkraut is “choucroute” which is an autumn/winter favourite here. Did you try any chasse (game) or a local dish called papet vaudois. It is chasse season now... |
