First visit to Strasbourg
 

Heading to Strasbourg in April. Want to visit surrounding cities by car. Any suggestions for an itinerary. Only have 6 days to sightsee. Also looking for Inns and B and Bs.

Head to Colmar - stay there a few days doing day trips along the Route des Vins de Alsace (sp?) meandering thru small wine villages - the road actually goes to the Geran border and for slow travelers meandering along it can be really nice - it runs at the foot of the Vosges mountains so you can detour to higher levels too though IME that is mainly forests.

The wine road is predominantly SW of Strasbourg. Interesting villages north and NW of strasbourg are La Petite Pierre, Wissenbourg, Hunspack (a <i>plus beau village</i>) and Betschdorf (a pottery village).

Thanks for the above suggestions. They are going to help me a lot since it will be our first trip to that area.

I thought Wissembourg was gorgeous, delightful to stroll around, fabulous architecture, canals, seemed off the tourist trail. We stayed in a beautiful bnb in a nearby town called Schweigen (Germany)only a few kms from Wissembourg and we just happened upon the bnb driving through, fantastic restaurant opposite as well. Love that area.
Loved Colmar and Hunawihr/ Riquewihr too, just that they are on every itinerary, did not bother me, at all, just if you prefer quieter places, go earlier/ later in day as with a car you have more flexibility.

Don't forget la Route des Cretes and La Fete des Jonquilles (wild daffodil/narcissus festival )a Gerardmer!
You may also visit Struthof concentration camp, the medieval city center of Freiburg im Breisgau, the Ecomusee d'Alsace, the car museum and the railway museum at Mulhouse........
or temporary exhibitions like the big Myanmar exhibtion at Stuttgart or the Gauguin exhibition at Basel.....

Morninglory.....it is in Mulhouse, the Schlumpf collection, brilliant. And I am no car enthusiast. A huge and fascinating historical collection. An easy trip from Strasbourg (we took the train) but very few people there (visited last July).

Just a thought, while people tend to think they are visiting countries, they are actually visiting geographical areas. So what starts as the Alsace wine are in France up to Wissembourg, suddenly changes into the completely different Pfalz wine area of Germany. So do look at going north, east and west

In colmar seek out copies of the original Statue of Liberty, created here and shipped in pieces to New Jersey where it now stands.
