First Trip to Italy > Rome & Sorrento - Advise Please

Hi All,

First trip to Italy in October (belated honeymoon), thoughts are:
Day 1 Flight to Rome arrives 1030 hrs
* sightseeing
Day 4 Train to Sorrento
* chilling, sightseeing
Day 10 Departure flight from Naples/Rome.

Any recommendations/tips? We would definitely like to see the Vatican (are these worth a go?http://www.viator.com/Rome-attractio...f=02&aid=g3701).

Reasonable accommodation in Rome and Sorrento? We don't want dirt cheap or expensive spa type hotels, and somewhere with a view of Vesuvius is planned.

Whats the travel like from Naples to Sorrento?

Are there day trips to Capri as well just jumping on a boat/similar & going by foot. Whats to do over there?

Departure from Naples. Can anyone recommend an airline to fly back to Birmingham? Original thoughts were a single to Rome, and a single from Naples to Birmingham. It seems to be cheaper by approx £100 to travel back to Rome and fly from there (with Monarch)!?! And a return from Birmingham to Rome is cheaper still.

Thanks in advance :)

We did a similar trip lst year. I wrote a very long trip report that may have some ideas for you.

We had more Rome and less Sorrento.

Hi smalls,

if you are going to do an "open jaw" flight then flying into Rome, doing Rome, and then getting the train to Naples and flying home from there is a great idea.

but if you are going to fly in and out of Rome, a better plan is to fly into Rome, get the train to Naples straight away, and stay in Sorrento, and then get the train back to Rome and finish your trip there.

This puts you in the right place for flying back home.

You've really only given yourself 2 1/2 days in Rome. I'd take a day or 2 from Sorrento and add it to Rome. There's so much to see and do in Rome. If you're planning a Vatican tour, that'll be a half day (getting there, museum, St. Peter's)
The Roman Forum and Colosseum are another 1/2 day visit.
I'd add more time to the Rome part of your trip.
