In decent weather, you can calculate your average (remember I said "average") at about 35 mph. In the dark, in bad weather, that slows down considerably. It isn't that the roads are bad in Ireland, I love driving there, it is just that most are small and not well marked. Forget things like the autostrade, 2 lane at best. Ireland is very far north, thus in the summer, it is still light out past midnight. But to the flip-side, in the winter the days are REALLY short.

You may or may not get snow. It isn't a usual experience, but it does happen. Since it isn't usual, that means there simply isn't that much equipment available to clear the roads.

With all that said, I'd still do a car and not do a bus. With the car you can adjust your schedule depending on the weather and what you want to see.

I love Ireland and would return in a skinny minute anytime!

Everywhere is close to pubs its Dublin! Glad someone mentioned Gap of Dunloe- truly awesome spot. I also agree that the Dingle Peninsula is worth spending some time on

How did your planning session go?

I read some of the other posts. Thought I would let you that I added 10 albums to look at in case you didn't see them all.
Also, the Ring of Kerry trip can be extremely slow if you are driving actually on the ring. That is another reason why I suggest the Gap of Dunloe. You are actually in the lake looking up at the Ring and not sitting behind the tour buses and traffic for 2 or more hours.
