First trip to France, route?
I'm about to hit the button for my tickets, $717 or $724 (extra night) on Aer Lingus from Boston. This fare is a sale for May 17 and I don't think I will do any better for that time. Any thoughts on that? So into Paris, fly to southern area for 6 nights and head back for last 5 days in Paris to get plane there. That way we wouldn't have to rush back. I know the train ride is long but is it worth scenery coming back or stick with the plane ride? Any favorite hidden spot suggestions? Still checking out hotels, any favorites?

Where, specifically??? Nice, Marseille, Montpellier, Toulouse, Perpignan, Pau, Biarritz??? What areas do you plan to visit after flying into one of these airports?
I think you need to do some location/hotel research on your own first.....

"Southern area" covers a massive amount of territory. Are you going to the Riviera? Provence? Basque Country? The Dordogne? Languedoc-Roussillon? Midi-Pyrénnées? No point in getting granular about hotels until you/we know where you're headed. I trust you have a detailed map of the country.
Depending on where you're headed, the train ride MIGHT be long, or it might be under 3 hours. But again, we'd need some idea of your location.

If, for example you were going to Lyon, you could land at CDG, walk over to the TGV station and be in Lyon mid-afdternoon and then reverse for catching flight home.
Lyon is the culinary capital of France (they brag) And has some nice stuff to visit, including roman ruins. But..no beaches.

I would take the train from the south to Paris, I only take flights in those situations when they are add-ons to an arriving flight (or to a departing one from the country). I always take the train if it is just to get between two cities where I am staying. It isn't a matter of scenery, in particular, it's not that great along the TGV line up to Paris. I just hate airports and all the hassle of them, and getting to/from them.
