First trip to Europe
 

I am going to Munich in June with my husband and 8-year-old. I would appreciate some tips on things to do and customes. Tip/No tips...things like that. Also, restaurant recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to Fodor's! First, you might want to tell us what you have doen so far to prepare yourself for the trip...like, have you purchased and read any guidebooks? done any searches on the internet to begin your research? Also, Fodors has some great info right at your fingertips. Look at the top of your screen and click "Destinations" then "Europe" then scan down to Germany and find Munich. You'll see a lot of interesting info on where to go and what to see. Once you compiled some information and want to narrow down your choices, you should repost your specific questions. When you post other questions, be sure you put info in the title so people know more specifically what your needing. For example, this post could be called "First trip to Munich, need basic info". Good luck on your research!

Poster above had good advice. It is tough to type an entire travel schedule for someone you do not know. Ask specific questions and you will get some good feedback from this forum.

Try to get to SALZBURG area while in Munich. Worth the trip as is BERCHTESGADEN AND GARMISCH.

I have gotten some books from the library. My husband will be in meetings most of the time, so I need to find things that my son would enjoy during the day. Thanks for the advice.

For your son: Definitelt take him to the Deutsche Museum. You probably will have a hard time getting him to leave there. The train, plane sections and the coal mine have particular appeal to kids his age. In the train section, in addition to original size and scale size trains of all ages, there is a big model RR layout. The museum is located on the Museum Insel and takles up the whole island in the Isar river. You can get there by subway and trams.

If he is into cars, see if a tour of BMW appeals to him. You can get there by sub-way.

Just riding the trams and sub-way probably will appeal to him, too. And take him to the train station (Hauptbahnhof), where you can go onto the platform for free and look at the ICE express trains. They are neat, or "cool". If you are up to it. you could take one as far as Augsburg, and again return by train.

There is a big garden show from now until October (I believe). It is in Riem, where the previous Munich airport was. I am not sure how much they have for kids to do, but you can find out in the tourist information office, on the lower level of the Karlsplatz Subway/Streetcar interchange.

Right at the Karlsplatz (at the fountain at the end of the Neuhauser Strasse pedestrian mall) is a big toy store, and I mean BIG. I think it is calle Obermaier, I believe.

There is an elevator in one of the towers of the cathedral for a great view of the city, as is from the Olympia Turm (tower)across from BMW). The latter has a restaurant.

For restaurants: Try the Torkelstuben, near the Hofbraeuhaus; the Ratskeller below the city hall. If you want something fancy, try "Zum Kaefer" in the Prinzregentenstrasse.

Again, for your boy: Also in the Prinzregentenstrasse is a museum of creches.

The lake in the Englischer Garten (Munich'as big park) has boating, if you are up to rowing! Munich has also a very nice zoo (Hellabrunn), accessible by tram.

That should keep you busy for a few days!
