the Mosel Valley also is one of the most gorgeous river valleys in Europe - the sinuous snakelike river running in a deep gorge at southward-facing places smothered in vineyards and dotted with celebrate wine towns.

Cochem is the picture postcard city of your dreams - great rail service to the Rhine and all of Germany and the type of town many dream of staying in but never do. Use it as a base for the Rhine and Trier, one of the most fascinating towns in Europe and perhaps the oldest continuous one in northern Europe being the capital of the western half of the Roman Empire a few thusand years again after being a Roman outpost - a former Roman Temple now is a Christian basilica - the Roman Porta Negra, a massive block city gate (gateway to the eastern part of the Roman Empire) still is intact and perhaps the most intact Roman relic north of the Alps.

Dreamy Cochem and its storybook castle popping out of a vineyard covered hill in town.
