First trip to Budapest
What are things not to miss on my first vist.
Love history, music clubs, Not dance! Walking, local food and places. Have five nights next April. Thanks , MIke |
Well if you could give us a little info on WHY you decided to go to Budapest it might help.
Also - you could search the destinations sections here to find out some of the major sights then come back with specific queries. |
Definitely spend some time exploring the Buda side--castle, labrynth, Fisherman's Bastion. The Pest side has many museums, Parliament, and more cafes and restaurants, etc. Our favorite museum was the House of Terror--seriously not to be missed. You should also make time for a Hungarian bath. We really enjoyed Széchényi Spa.
For info and pics visit our Budapest post at http://patrinadoestheglobe.blogspot.com/ Have a wonderful trip! |
nytraveler,
Have been to most of Europes major cities already. Budapest seems very interesting. |
There appears to be a lot of holistic bath houses, my wife's family history has some ties to Budapest, looks medievil and mysterious. What is here that we should not miss? Thank you!
|
One place that not mentioned so much in Budapest is the Terror Museum, which chronicles the post-WW II era through the end of the Soviet era in Hungary. Sad but interesting, and very well presented (signage is in Hungarian and English).

The view from the Freedom Statue high on the hill at night. Beautiful!!
The indoor market was fun - the paprika shop. Heros Square Walking down Andrassy Ave |
As above. If you can, make a trip up the the Fisherman's Bastion after 9 PM. It is free at night & the views of Pest are incredible.

Ian and bratsandbeer,
Thank you very much for your help, and the link with the great pictures. Mike |
I would also recommend Statue Park outside Budapest if you're interested in the communist era. Find the shoe monument beside the Danube. Also, Cave Church. Be sure to eat streudel at Ruzwurm's.

I just got back from Budapest last night, after spending 4 full days there. I will be posting a trip report soon, so just keep your eyes open for that.
