First timer to Italy/Tuscany

My boyfriend and I, and another couple will be traveling to Italy this Spring for a week. We have decided to spend the whole week exploring Florence and the Tuscany area. Is it better to stay in either the city or the country for the entire week, and make day trips to the location, or should we split our stays between the two? We also all like adventurous excursions, does anybody have any good suggestions?

It depends if you plan to drive. If so, then I would do a weekly rental in Chianti and day trip from there. If not, stay in Florence and take public transport from there--renting an apt.

IMHO a car is a must for exploring Tuscany. I would give Florence at least 2 nights then pick up a car. I'm not a firm believer in parking and then doing day trips, you spend a lot of time driving back to where you are staying. 2 nights in Siena would be good and then a couple in one of the other hill towns would work for me.
